Ampliy’s upcoming art exhibition started with a simple conversation. The Amplify Youth Advisory Committee was sitting around a table tossing around ideas on how to feature the boundless creativity of youth.
They decided to create Blue. The Exhibition and ask local youth to submit their top visual arts projects for a one-of-a-kind art show taking place in the St. Albert Place lobby on Tuesday, Nov. 28.
“We wanted to do a winter art exhibition. A lot of visual art events happen in the spring, so we thought winter might be a good time to do ours. We gave it the theme ‘Blue,’ a word that is open to interpretation. It can be a colour, a feeling, a mood. We also thought blue is winter relatable. The blue winter, the blue of cold. We wanted to have a seasonal vibe,” said Kathleen Bell, community cultural coordinator for Amplify.
Visual artists from Grade 7 to 21 years of age are encouraged to apply online before Sunday, Nov. 5.
The exhibition accepts assorted media ranging from traditional painting, illustrations and collage, to photography, digital art and sculptural works.
“All the art pieces must be stable, secure and be able to be presented in a public lobby format. Fabric art, weaving, pottery, and jewelry are also welcome — as long as we can mount it on bi-folds and tri-folds used to mount art,” Bell said.
Youth are encouraged to contribute up to three pieces in assorted styles and genres.
“The work can be old or new. You can go through your portfolio and select the ones you are comfortable showing. Just keep in mind the public display is for all ages.”
To make this exhibition more inclusive, there will be no judging and no voting.
“It’s strictly view and appreciate.”
The art drop-off date is Monday, Nov. 27 and the pickup dates are Dec. 4 to Dec. 8 at the Community Services Office at St. Albert Place.
