South American wines have a romantic vibe about them. But if you want a taste, you don’t have to kiss your hard-earned loonies goodbye to fly south of the equator.

The St. Albert Seniors Association brings that pleasure to your doorstep with a Latin American wine tasting evening on Friday, Nov. 25. The highlights are five specialty wines from Chile and Argentina paired with appetizers.

Additionally, the fundraiser will feature a 50/50 draw, silent auction, raffle draws, and door prizes. A wine bar will also be available with drinks for sale by glass or bottle. And anyone who pre-purchases a table for eight will be entered in a draw for a limousine ride to and from the event.

Tara Smith, a professional sommelier, will guide the audience through its discovery of three red and two white wines. Meanwhile, centre volunteers serve tapas to complement each beverage.

Currently in its seventh year, the fundraiser is popular with a wide spectrum of wine aficionados in fthe 18-plus crowd.

“It’s educational and entertaining. You get to try different wines and you learn more about wine tasting,” said Kerri Akins, chair of the wine tasting committee.

“The first year we had it, it was held in the afternoon, and it was for our members only. Lots of people enjoyed it and we decided to open it up to everyone. We’ve stepped it up one more notch. We’ve made it bigger and better, and everyone has so much fun.”

So far, 100 tickets out of 150 tickets have been sold. Organizers hope to raise $10,000.

“We encourage singles, doubles and triples to come. You don’t have to buy a table. It’s a good way to socialize and meet people. Everybody here is very welcoming.”

Doors open at 6 p.m. A complimentary drink will be served. Event starts at 7 p.m. Single tickets are $60 or $480 for a reserved table of eight. Call 780-459-0433 or drop by Red Willow Place at 7 Tache Street.
