Dish Mob's food bingo is for the adventurous

The bingo squares range anywhere from pizzas, sushi, ethnic cuisine and corner store munchies to baking, smoothies, ice cream and liquor. There’s even a square for writing a positive review of an establishment. No two squares are alike.

The Dish Mob has started a bingo card to encourage residents to eat local.

St. Albert’s restaurant industry is open for business and a public Facebook group is hoping to give sales a boost.

The Dish Mob’s eat local campaign is taking a cue from the world of bingo as a way of creating fun, momentum and awareness for a hospitality industry suffering a serious cash crunch in the wake of COVID-19.

On its Facebook page and in the Wednesday, June 10 Gazette, the group posted a bingo card with 24 different squares listing various types of eateries from pub and grub to fine dining.

“Players try to create a straight line anywhere on the card using four or five blocks,” said Dish Mob administrator Carmal Huppie. In partnership with Leanna Fox and Nicole McLean, Huppie founded Dish Mob about three years ago.

The bingo squares range anywhere from pizzas, sushi, ethnic cuisine and corner store munchies to baking, smoothies, ice cream and liquor. There’s even a square for writing a positive review of an establishment. No two squares are alike.

“Just remember to keep your receipts as proof,” Huppie said.

The bingo runs for four consecutive weeks and the first set of winners will be announced Friday, June 19. Weekly prizes of gift cards are offered.

“If St. Albert businesses would like to contribute, we’d be happy to hear from them.”

Huppie stated each bingo card is filled with a great deal of activity and has the potential to provide much support.

“We can benefit the community by shifting our spending dollars when we have the opportunity. If we don’t use local businesses, we lose local restaurants.”

Currently, Dish Mob has 3,500 Facebook members.
