What does it mean to describe something or someone as ‘normal’? What is ‘normal’ and who gets to decide what is ‘normal’ or not? As defined by curator Michelle Lavoie, the term ‘normal’ refers to accepted ways of being: culturally constructed ideas around gender, sexuality and expected and accepted behaviour. These norms create the limits of what is accepted by a society and ensure that people stay within the boundaries. Since time immemorial all societies have set norms of behaviour.…

“Certain behaviours of our species make it difficult for other creatures to survive”, says Edmonton-based interdisciplinary artist, Gerri Harden. Harden’s unusual and brilliant exhibition Birds, Bees and Ambergris fixates on habitat loss, the effects of pesticide use, and the shocking amounts of non-biodegradable waste in the oceans. This installation-based exhibition takes the visitor on a journey through a series of created environments. These norms create the limits of what is accepted by a society and ensure that people stay within the boundaries. Since time immemorial all societies have set norms of behaviour.…

The exhibition, LandMark, features new works by Alberta Indigenous artists: Brenda Draney, Tanya Harnett and Terrance Houle. For each of these artists, the land and landscape of their home territory in Alberta has provided inspiration for the creation of works that address time and ancestry, nature and the environment, community and storytelling. Working in painting, photography and video, the work of these 3 artists present the land, not as geography or vista, but as intimate and person places that are marked by lived…

As visitors advance through the gallery space, hundreds of life-sized bees scattered on the floor are unavoidable. Their…
