Two of Edmonton's finest and most versatile actors join forces in playwright Keith Huff's A Steady Rain.

John Ullyatt and Jesse Gervais star in this two-hander that originally opened on Broadway with Daniel Craig and Hugh Jackman.

Directed by Wayne Paquette, artistic director of Blarney Productions, this 90-minute melodrama revolves around two Chicago cops whose friendship is severely tested through a series of bad decisions.

Not the sharpest knives on the squad, they inadvertently return a young boy to a cannibalistic serial killer who claims to be the boy's uncle. Later the boy turns up as the latest victim.

Both men have character flaws and serious problems. The more introverted Joey is a single guy with a drinking problem and is infatuated with Connie, Denny's wife. Tough-guy Denny is a hard-core racist and cheats on his wife with a prostitute on his beat.

The 90-minute production runs from May 28 to June 7 at C103 (8529 Gateway Blvd.) and is spring-loaded with a disturbing edge.

Tickets are $15 to $20. Call 780-420-1757 or online at tixonthesquare.ca.

Teatro Quindicina kick-starts its season with Anthony Shaffer's compelling mystery-thriller Sleuth.

The 1970 play hasn't been seen locally in nearly three decades and Teatro's artistic director Stewart Lemoine thought the time was right to stage it once more.

In this war of wits, Andrew Wyke, a celebrated mystery writer lures his wife's playboy lover, Milo Tindle to his country house for polite conversation about the woman they both pretend to love.

Wyke convinces Milo to steal his wife's jewelry. Milo can keep the jewelry or sell it and Wyke can receive a handsome insurance payout. Both men are manipulative game-players and their participation sets off a chain of events, each one more bizarre than the last.

Julien Arnold and Mat Busby take on the roles of these two cat and mouse adversaries.

Sleuth plays at the ATB Financial Arts Barns from May 28 to June 13. Single and season tickets are available at 780-420-1757 or online at tixonthesquare.ca.
