On Tuesday, March 22, St. Albert Curling Club's 50+ mixed curling league celebrated its wind-up bonspiel and banquet.

This event, held at the St. Albert Curling Club, was sold out — 96 curlers of varying age and skill level participated in this two-day bonspiel.

“I’m so happy that this event could happen this year, as last year it was canceled due to COVID restrictions,” said Dennis Noel, bonspiel co-ordinator and part of the volunteer executive committee that runs the 50+ league.

“We had a great turnout, and the banquet was a great success.”

A big thank you to Mama M’s Catering, who served an awesome Greek dinner! The winning team of this year’s Bonspiel was: skip Norm Rivard, third Colleen Ross, second Lil Andruchow, and lead David Woloshyn.

The 50+ league is made up of a vibrant community of avid curlers. “We aren’t just curlers, we’re social butterflies,” joked Sandra De Medeiros, social director. “Many lasting friendships are created here on the ice. We try to foster those relationships with in-house events, with member appreciation days, a holiday party, stick curling bonspiel and the windup bonspiel.”

The league could not exist without the generous support it receives from its sponsors. “Our sponsor support helps us to offset the costs of the events, allowing many curlers to participate as they keep the costs low,” said Rod Chmiliar, president of the 50+ Mixed Curling League. “This year was a tough year for many businesses in our local community due to COVID, but somehow they came through for us once again.”

And come through they did.

This year’s windup Bonspiel had 100 quarter-chicken dinners donated for the Monday lunch by the local Swiss Chalet. Other donations from local shops: Canadian Brewhouse south, Original Joes, External Affairs Medical Spa, Chatters Hair Beauty and Salon, M&M Meats north, Boston Pizza, Canadian Tire, Toast Breakfast and Lunch, Dairy Queen, The Cajun House, Klondyke Flowers, Mission: Fun and Games, Trail Tire, Save-On-Foods (Village Landing), Safeway, Crown and Tower Pub, and Backyard Grill. Even two long-standing members donated items: big thanks to Margaret Moore and Jan Dekker!

The league would also like to acknowledge its generous annual sponsors: Swiss Chalet, Servus Credit Union, Riverside Honda & Skidoo, St. Albert Tune-Up & Brake, and Select Equipment Rentals.
