Be a voice of compassion for all

From the banning of pit bulls from Montreal to various cases of animal cruelty and mistreatment, animal rights are often a popular topic of discussion. Anyone who knows me personally knows that I am an animal lover.

From the banning of pit bulls from Montreal to various cases of animal cruelty and mistreatment, animal rights are often a popular topic of discussion.

Anyone who knows me personally knows that I am an animal lover. I have always grown up with pets, all of which were adopted from our local animal shelter. I began my writing career at the age of six: researching different animal facts to make reports, in hopes of one day being a veterinarian at a zoo. To put it simply, I will always love and advocate for our furry friends. While animal rights hold a place in my heart, I have recently been struck by our inability to have such passion, and compassion, for our fellow human beings.

In such a polarizing and divisive political climate, disagreements are inevitable. But putting your placement on the political spectrum aside, when human rights are being violated, we should all be able to agree that caring for our fellow human beings is vital.

I find it shocking how many people post on social media encouraging their friends to sign petitions or donate to animal causes – homeless animals in need of a forever home or a plea for justice for animals who have been abused. And yet, in cases of injustice for the people in their community, those same people on social media are silent.

Hateful rhetoric has become more common. While it is naÄŹve to suggest all disagreements can simply be put aside, if we rushed to treat and provide for those living in poverty as we do for homeless kittens and puppies, our community would be far better off.

As I mentioned, I love and support animal causes. Yet, I cannot help but cringe at the discrepancy. We lament poverty in our communities while taking our pampered pets from the doggy salon to the dog park, in their brand name dog collars.

How can you call out a lack of humanity in regards to animal cruelty, and not call out the lack of humanity elsewhere? Just as there are cruel people who take advantage of innocent animals, there are cruel people who take advantage of innocent people.

Of course human beings are not as helpless as animals. Social issues, and the people and their experiences at the centre of them, are incredibly complex. Individuals must take responsibility for themselves and their actions. However, is that to say that the same basic concepts of justice and compassion should not apply?

Ultimately, I feel if you choose to call out for an end to violence, or in cases of injustice, you should do so in all circumstances. No social issues are simplistic, and therefore, none have a simple fix. However, the basic act of compassion and care are what create immense positive and political change. Put the hateful rhetoric aside, and be a voice of compassion. Not just for animals, but for your community at large.
