The Opportunity

Reporting to the Supervisor, Aquatics, the Senior Lifeguard/Instructor performs regular instructional and lifeguard duties. The position assists the Supervisor in the preparation, execution, and supervision of all aquatic-related programs as needed. In the absence of the Supervisor and Manager, Recreation Services, the Senior Lifeguard/Instructor is responsible for the direct supervision of the aquatics team.

What You Will Do

• Perform lifeguarding functions, according to Provincial and Town of Collingwood guidelines.
• Maintain complete vigilance while on duty and be ready to respond to any emergency situation. Implement proper rescue and emergency procedures for those in difficulty, danger or injured.
• Supervise patrons to ensure their safety at all times.
• Monitor patron headcount and ensure correct patron-to-lifeguard ratio.
• Work as a part of an effective lifeguard team to ensure proper positioning, rotations and communication including verbal, hand signals and whistles. Remain on duty until relieved by another qualified lifeguard/instructor
• Plan, organize and deliver high quality, safe and stimulating swimming lessons for all levels of participants. Keep current with industry trends and class formats.
• Prepare lesson plans including games, showing initiative in providing an interesting program and/or service, implementing special events or activities within sessions. Assist other instructors with lesson plan preparation.
• Ensure staff prepare report cards for all program participants in class and review before distribution. Communicate with parents/guardian of students on a regular basis.
• Set up for classes and tidy up equipment and supplies
• Lead pool staff to ensure that staff are qualified and perform duties in a safe and courteous manner.
• In the absence of the Supervisor and Manager, supervise aquatics staff and be responsible for safe, organized operation of the pool facility.
• Assist the Supervisor with planning and executing training activities, special events/programs, and school programs.
• Maintain a safe and tidy program space ensuring equipment is set-up and stored appropriately. Inspect and clean equipment daily to ensure cleanliness.
• Perform daily maintenance duties including water tests to ensure adequate water quality (determine chlorine content and pH value of water, using water testing kit) and alkalinity tests.
• Complete administrative duties in a timely manner (e.g., attendance, incident/accident reports, opening and closing procedures).
• Provide a high level of front-line customer service, greeting and engaging participants.

Skills and Experience

• Demonstrated knowledge of current guarding techniques, departmental procedures, and pool operations. Working knowledge of applicable safety regulations and organization policies, procedures and standards.
• An ability to understand and effectively carry out oral and written instructions, and to maintain pool and surrounding areas in a neat and orderly manner.
• Excellent communication, interpersonal, organizational, time management, customer service and public relations skills, together with the ability to use tact and discretion and to deal courteously and effectively with the public and fellow staff members.
• Ability to multi-task, cope with interruptions and work under pressure to meet multiple deadlines, exercise discretion and good judgment particularly when handling highly confidential/sensitive information. Possess high degree of initiative and personal integrity.

Qualifications

• Completion of Ontario Secondary School Diploma or equivalent.
• National Lifeguard Standard certification, Lifesaving Society Swim Instructor and Lifesaving Society Instructor (current within 2-years),
• Valid standard first aid & CPR/AED Level C certification, First Aid Instructor/Examiner certification,
• National Lifeguard Standard Instructor and Examiner to Bronze Cross level.
• Certified High Five PHCD, Aquatic Supervisor training, Lifesaving Society Instructor Trainer, or Quest 2 certification an asset.
• Possess a current Vulnerable Sector Check with results satisfactory to the employer.

Normal hours of work are thirty-five (35) hours per week and includes early morning, day, evening, weekend, and holiday shifts. The pay range is $52,579.80 to $67,067.00 per year.
