Police raid leads to 64 charges against a single suspect

Rifles, shotguns and a crossbow, along with a bevy of illicit drugs, seized by police in Northern Alberta community.

WESTLOCK, Alta. – A 31-year-old Westlock man faces 64 drug trafficking and firearms-related charges following an Aug. 31 RCMP raid they say netted meth, cocaine and GHB, along with nine rifles and shotguns.

A Sept. 7 RCMP release states that on Aug. 28, Westlock RCMP launched an investigation into allegations of drug trafficking in the Town of Westlock. Further investigation resulted in police obtaining a search warrant for a residence located in the 110th Street area and on Aug. 31, it was executed with the assistance of the RCMP Police Dog Service.

RCMP say the search resulted in methamphetamine, cocaine and GHB being seized along with five rifles, four shotguns, including one sawed-off shotgun, a crossbow, five air guns and ammunition. During the search other drug and trafficking paraphernalia were seized along with a stolen licence plate and laptop. 

Westlock’s Darcy Allan Kandt, 31, was arrested at the residence and is charged with nine counts each of possession of a restricted firearm, unauthorized possession of a firearm and unsafe storage of a firearm, along with 30 counts of possession of a firearm or ammunition contrary to an order and a single charge of possession of a firearm with a tampered serial number. As far as drug-related charges, Kandt, who was scheduled to make his first appearance in Westlock Provincial Court Sept. 7, faces three counts of possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking and two charges of possession of the proceeds of crime of a value not exceeding $5,000.

Dustin Travis Badke, 34, and Tyler Cory Stump, 24, who are also Westlock residents, were also arrested and have been charged with possession of a controlled substance — their first appearance in Westlock Provincial Court is slated for Nov. 9.
