Alberta will be home to 12 major sporting events over the next three months. These sporting events include seven national and four international competitions that have been made possible to be hosted in the province thanks to a $1.2 million commitment from the government in the Major Sport Event grant program.
"Hosting major sporting events in our province is about more than the competition — it’s about building on our province’s reputation as a premier destination, providing opportunities for local athletes and driving economic growth," said Minister of Tourism and Sport Joseph Schow. "I am thrilled to welcome these events to our province, and I encourage everyone to be a part of the excitement. Best of luck to all our Alberta athletes!”
The events cover a diverse range of sports, including hockey, judo, mountain biking, and climbing. Volleyball is also on the list with the 2025 Volleyball Canada Youth National Championships taking place in northern Alberta from May 9-25. This tournament alone is projected to welcome more than 40,000 people and inject $53 million into the province's economy.
"Having the opportunity to compete in my own city, with friends and family there to support me, means everything," Carter Shank, an athlete participating in the competition, said. "It pushes me to be my best and persevere through the tough times. It also allows me to celebrate the wins with those who helped me get here. It’s a feeling like no other, and I’m truly grateful to the Government of Alberta for making it possible."
Other notable events in Alberta this year include the 2025 Esso Cup, which wrapped up in Lloydminster in April, and the 2025 Open National Judo Championships which is taking place in Calgary in mid-May.
