As the effects of 2017 Harvey Weinstein sexual harassment scandal ripple across the world, it reinforces the idea that gender parity is still lopsided.
Gender parity is unlikely to happen overnight. However, the good news is that women across the world are making gains every day. There is a global movement towards human rights advocacy and activism.
For 22 years, the St. Albert Baha’i have worked towards gender parity to achieve equality through International Women’s Day in March. This year’s theme is #PressforProgress.
Once again the Baha’i are asking community members to nominate good-hearted, tenacious women who put their best foot forward to build connections between family, friends and community – either locally or on a global scale. They will be honoured at a dinner on Saturday, March 3.
“We want people to recognize women that have made a significant contribution in life. We want to include everybody. A significant contribution can mean teaching someone to read one-on-one. It can mean doing something that affects a huge number of people. Whatever it is, we want to hear about,” said Elaine Tahririha, Baha’i committee spokesperson.
The committee will consider contributions in every walk of life from the arts, business, education and health to medicine, engineering, sports and literacy. And some categories occasionally taken for granted are motherhood, volunteerism and peace activism. The field is wide open.
“Women are the great connectors of the world. They create communities in homes, schools, churches, synagogues and temples. We want to honour and inspire them to do their best. And if they feel appreciated, they will inspire and motivate others, and so on and so on. There is value in what we do, and we need to take that and move forward.”
The organizing committee welcomes nominations from individuals, organizations and community groups. Nominees must be residents of St. Albert, Sturgeon County or one of the towns within Sturgeon County.
Nomination deadline is Saturday, Feb. 2, 2018 at 9 a.m. An online nomination form is available at http://www.stalbertbahai.org/IWD-womensday.html.
