Up for biz awards

The Morinville and District Chamber of Commerce is just a day away from recognizing the community’s top businesses.

On Thursday, the chamber will host its annual gala and awards evening. This year, the gala will present more than 10 awards to businesses in Morinville and the surrounding area.

“We want the business people to have recognition for the work that they do,” said Diane Mineault, executive director of the chamber. “That’s why we do it.”

This year, the number of nominations has nearly doubled since the last gala, with the chamber receiving 58. Mineault said the jump could be a result of a larger organizing committee.

Last year, only two people were on the committee. This year, there were six.

The chamber has also increased its promotion of the event. Last year, the gala only had 22 nominations, down from 50 in 2016.

“We have a lot of nominees, so if I were judging it would be really hard to choose,” she said with a laugh. “I’m glad I wasn’t.”

The theme this year is straight from the Old West. While last year called for formal dress, this year the chamber is focusing on blue jeans and fried beans.

“It’s going to be fun. This year they just can wear blue jeans, cowboy hats and boots,” Mineault explained.

The event will kick off at 6 p.m. and run till 11 p.m. There will be live entertainment from local Justin Hogg and a silent auction. For more information, visit the Morinville and District Chamber of Commerce website at http://www.morinvillechamber.com/events/2018-gala/.
