On Tap are the bantam AAA Sabres, midget 15 Flyers and high school football

Sabres at home

The St. Albert Gregg Distributors Sabres host the SSAC Southgate Lions in today’s season opener in the Alberta Major Bantam Hockey League.

Faceoff is 1:45 p.m. at Akinsdale Arena.

Sunday the Sabres play MLAC Scott Pump at 5:30 p.m. at Millwoods Arena.

The Sabres finished the preseason with a record of 6-0.

Tyson Greenway, a forward, is the only returning player from the 2016/17 Sabres that placed first overall in league play at 31-1-4 but in the playoffs lost the best-of-five north final in five games to the Fort Saskatchewan Rangers (27-7-2), the league champions and bronze medallists at westerns.

Midget 15 Flyers

The St. Albert Super Grip Flyers close out the preseason this weekend at Terwillegar Community Recreation Centre.

The midget 15 Flyers skate tonight at 6 p.m. against the Lloydminster Rage and Sunday’s game time is 3:30 p.m. against the Sherwood Park Squires.

The Alberta Minor Midget AAA Hockey League lid-lifter for the Flyers is next Saturday against the Fort Saskatchewan Rangers at 2:45 p.m. at JRC Arena.

The home opener is Oct. 15 against the Rockyview Raiders at 10:45 a.m. at Akinsdale Arena.

The Flyers finished the 2016/17 season as the top north division team at 32-4-1, won the Sutter North Cup playoff tournament and were bronze medallists at provincials while going 5-2 in the six-team competition.

Football Friday

All three St. Albert high school football teams huddle up Friday at Larry Olexiuk Field.

The Battle of St. Albert between the Tier II Paul Kane Blues and Tier III St. Albert High Skyhawks kicks off at 5 p.m. in the division two Miles conference and the Tier I Bellerose Bulldogs tackle the Jasper Place Rebels at 7:30 p.m. in the division one Carr conference.

Gate admission is $5.

The results in the last two tilts between the Blues and Skyhawks in the Miles were 78-14 in 2013 and 56-0 in 2014 for Paul Kane, a former feeder school for the St. Albert Catholic football program until the formation of the 2011 Blues in metro Edmonton football.

Both teams were in action Friday as the Blues (1-0) lined up against the Strathcona Lords (1-0), last year’s champions, and the Skyhawks (1-0) went toe-to-toe with the Archbishop Jordan Scots (0-1).

The Bulldogs (2-0) also played the Harry Ainlay Titans (2-0) Friday at Foote Field.

Scores were unavailable at press time.
