St. Albert flies pride flag

St. Albert is flying a pride flag in support of the LGBT community, joining several Canadian communities that raised the rainbow flag as the Olympics get underway in Sochi, Russia, where there are concerns about LGBT rights.

The flag raising occurred just after 4 p.m. on Friday afternoon at St. Albert Place after the idea was brought forward by Coun. Tim Osborne earlier in the day.

“I think it’s a small thing we can do to really show our support,” Osborne said. “It’s something I’m proud to have played a small part in.”

The other councillors Osborne talked to were comfortable with the rainbow flag being raised, he said.

Mayor Nolan Crouse noted the Olympics are partly political, and this is a political statement.

“Really it’s a statement that demonstrates support for all people,” Crouse said.

The flag will continue to fly until the end of the Olympics.
