The defending Presidents’ Cup champions are undefeated after day three at the senior B lacrosse nationals.

The St. Albert Miners posted wins of 13-7 against the host Six Nations Slash (0-3) Sunday, 23-4 against the Saskatoon Brewers (0-3) Monday and 15-7 against the Nova Scotia Privateers (0-3) Tuesday at the Six Nations of the Grand River in Ontario.

Keegan Bal and Richard Lachlan are the Miners’ top scorers with 29 and 25 points, respectively.

Lachlan’s 18 goals include eight against Nova Scotia.

Bal collected 16 assists after three games and recorded five goals and 11 points against Saskatoon.

Graedon Cornfield also produced four goals and 13 points.

The Miners are 27-1 overall this season after going 25-0-1 last year as the host team for nationals in Leduc and the Presidents’ Cup was the first by an Alberta team since the Sherwood Park Outlaws in 2007.

The last repeat winner at nationals was St. Regis in 2011-12.

Bulldogs football

The Bellerose Bulldogs kicked off the high school football season with a convincing exhibition win Friday in Lacombe.

Grade 12 quarterback Quade Kozak completed 14 of 20 passes for 320 yards and six touchdowns in the first three quarters of the 47-0 decision against the Notre Dame Cougars of Red Deer.

Logan McCullough caught three TDs, Travis Heggart was on the receiving end of two scoring strikes and Cordel Callioux also hauled in a TD pass.

Callioux hit Nathan Brake for a TD in the fourth quarter.

Heggart was the leading receiver with five receptions for 126 yards.

Ben VanLeeuwen converted five out of seven converts and was the team’s top rusher.

On defence, lineman Branden Jackson recorded one sack, recovered a fumble and dished out some bone crunching hits.

Matt Coogan and Brett Yost, a pair of linebackers, led the team in tackles.

The secondary didn’t allow a single completion for a first down.

In Saturday’s scrimmage against West Central at Rocky Mountain House, the Bulldogs sat all but three Grade 12s and several Grade 11s so the team’s young seniors and mostly junior players could get meaningful reps.

Rookie standouts included Adam Rafat and Jordan Howe and both Grade 10 players reeled in TD passes from Callioux.

Michael Toovey, a Grade 12 rookie, scored both a rushing major and receiving TD.

Defensively, Grade 10 rookie Kolby Phillips picked off two passes.

The metro Edmonton league openers for the Bulldogs are Sept. 8 for the division one Carr conference team against the Spruce Grove Panthers and Sept. 19 for the junior team against the O’Leary Spartans. Kickoff times are 6 p.m. at Riel Recreation Park.

Tier III provincials

The Forest Park Rangers are the St. Albert Men’s Soccer League reps at the Alberta Soccer Association Tier III championship in Calgary.

Saturday at noon in pool two the SAMSL pennant winners play TRSA, 10-2-2 in the Tier IV Turner division in the Edmonton District Soccer Association.

Sunday’s match times are 9 a.m. against Calgary No. 2 and 5 p.m. against Medicine Hat.

Monday’s medal finals are 9 a.m. for bronze and gold.

The Rangers finished 12-1-1 (60 GF/16 GA) in the SAMSL fixtures and in the playoffs were 2-0 (8 GF/2 GA) in pool B.

The top two teams in pool A and B meet in the Sept. 10 crossovers to determine the two-game aggregate finalists for the SAMSL playoff cup and third place trophy on Sept. 12 at Salisbury field and Sept. 17 at Riel Recreation Park.

The Rangers lost last year’s aggregate final to Prestige Worldwide.
