Raiders win two
The St. Albert Tire Warehouse Raiders swept the weekend season opener in the Alberta Midget AAA Hockey League.
Scores were 4-2 against the Kings in Sherwood Park and 5-2 against the Grande Peace Storm at Akinsdale Arena.
Netminder Mitch Reidy faced 19 shots against the Kings (1-1) and was tested 18 times by the Storm (0-1-1).
Erik Boers, Brady Nicholas, Jacob Charko and Eddie Gallagher potted goals against the Kings as the Raiders registered 30 shots.
Zach Carlson’s second goal in a row in the third period against the Storm (1-1) was also the team’s third on the power play as Charko and Stuart Dovey, who made it 3-2 at 4:05 in the period, cashed in with the man advantage.
Nicholas also scored as the Raiders registered 34 shots.
Mason Rezewski and Ryan Harker had two assists apiece.
The Raiders are in Calgary this weekend for games against the Northstars (1-0-1) Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at Max Bell Centre and the Buffaloes (2-0) Sunday at 1:45 p.m. at Cardel Rec South.
A depleted lineup didn’t stop the 2017 Esso Cup national champions from winning the season opener in the Alberta Female Hockey League.
Jaden Bogden and Libby Langenhahn scored in the shootout as the midget AAA St. Albert Slash prevailed 2-1 over the Calgary Fire at Go Auto Arena.
Brianna Sank gave up one goal while stopping 30 shots in regulation time and the five-minute extra period and was beaten once in the shootout.
Calgary opened the scoring with a shorthanded effort in the first period and Makenna Schuttler knotted the count 42 seconds into the second with Bogden assisting on the play.
The Slash were credited with 24 shots on net.
The defending AFHL and Pacific Region champions dressed 13 players and one affiliate because of player commitments with the U18 Team Alberta selection camp.
Tuesday’s score against the visiting Edmonton Pandas was unavailable at press time.
The teams play again Saturday at 7:45 p.m. at Clare Drake Arena.
Crusaders on top
The St. Albert Source for Sports Crusaders tallied twice on 52 shots and Shane Zilka posted the shutout in Friday’s season lid-lifter against the Fort Saskatchewan Rangers.
Logan McKinley struck shorthanded in the second period and Dawson Laycock notched the insurance marker on the power play with 11:54 remaining in the Northern Alberta Midget AA Hockey League contest at Go Auto Arena.
Rhys Mazur assisted on both goals and Shane Zilka stopped 15 shots in the 2-0 decision.
Monday’s score against the Leduc Roughnecks in St. Albert was unavailable at press time.
The 2017 NAMHL finalists travel this weekend against the Grande Peace Storm at 4:30 p.m. Saturday in Clairmont and the Whitecourt Wolverines at 1 p.m. Sunday.
Midget 15 Flyers
The St. Albert Flyers recorded the first point of the season in Sunday’s stalemate with the Lloydminster Bobcats in the Alberta Minor Midget AAA Hockey League.
Ryland Strauss, Maddux Nollski, Luke Cust (power play) and Ryley Morgan scored in the 4-4 draw in the Border City.
The Bobcats erased a two-goal deficit in the third period with a pair 2:15 minutes apart.
Shots were 35-27 for the Bobcats and in net for the midget 15 Flyers was Matt Clement.
The season opener was Saturday’s 4-3 loss to the Fort Saskatchewan Rangers at JRC Arena.
The Rangers capitalized twice with the man advantage in the third.
Nollski (power play), Mathieu Gautier and Ronin Pusch connected as the Flyers outshot the Rangers 37-26.
Ethan Barwick was between the pipes.
The next game is Sunday versus the PAC Saints at 1:30 p.m. at Grant Fuhr Arena.
