Police Beat

A cyclist was hit by a vehicle while trying to cross Sturgeon Road in a marked crosswalk.

On Thursday afternoon just before 5 p.m. a 13-year-old girl was hit by a car and transported to the hospital by EMS with non life-threatening injuries.

The girl was attempting to cross Sturgeon Road with a 12-year-old girl when the incident happened. The younger girl began crossing the road on her bicycle and the older girl followed her friend into the crosswalk. A white Ford Mustang, which was stopped at a red light waiting to make a right turn onto Boudreau Road, saw a break in traffic and drove forward and didn’t see the second girl.

The St. Albert RCMP are reminding cyclists to always dismount from bikes while crossing roadways. They also want to remind anyone using a crosswalk to make eye contact with the driver before proceeding.

RCMP recommend using the “Point, pause and proceed” method of crossing the street. They also are reminding motorists to be extra cautious when approaching crosswalks and intersections. They want pedestrians to obey the rules of the road, use designated crosswalks and be aware of their surroundings.

A rare custom BMX bike was among the items stolen from a vehicle in the early morning hours on Thursday.

Unknown suspects broke into a parked vehicle at Richard F. Fowler Junior High School and stole the distinctive bike valued at $1,700.

The bike has a Black Bonesaw frame with stickers. The bike has four-piece matte black bars, black Ă©clat grips and four black plastic pegs with the back right peg broken. The bike also has a purple chain, no brakes, and a black S&M sprocket. The front wheel of the bike has a gold rim and the back wheel is a Lacasta Free Coaster with a Merrit tire. There is also a rubber tire wrapped around the frame.

Also stolen from the same vehicle were a Gucci wallet, two backpacks, a grey bike helmet, BMX tools, registration and insurance for the vehicle and two vapes.

The total value of the stolen items is around $2,450.

Later in the evening on Thursday a male was seen riding the stolen bike near Canadian Tire and Sorrel Crescent by Vital Grandin Elementary School. The suspect was wearing the stolen grey bike helmet and carrying one of the stolen backpacks.

RCMP have been unable to locate the individual.
