The St. Albert Merchants make their season debut this weekend at the Morinville Jets’ tournament at Ray McDonald Sports Centre.

Saturday the Merchants play the Strathcona Bruins at 1:30 p.m. and the Stony Plain Flyers at 6 p.m. and Sunday’s game times are 12:15 p.m. against the Leduc Riggers and 7 p.m. against the rival Jets.

The Capital Junior B Hockey League lid-lifter for the 2014 pennant winners (34-3-1) and Founders Cup finalists is Sept. 19 against the North Edmonton Red Wings at 8 p.m. at Akinsdale Arena.

The fourth-place finishers at provincials finished 45-11-1 overall last season.

Sept. 17 is the deadline to register online for the 12th annual Fall Challenge on the Red Willow trails.

Visit to sign up for 21.1-kilometre half-marathon run/walk (two laps on the trails), 10-km run/walk (one lap) and five-km run/walk on Sept. 21.

As of Sunday 54 runners had registered for the half-marathon run, including Sean Saville (2014 Leading Edge RunWild half-marathon winner at 1:23:14 and last year’s Fall Challenge runner-up at 1:23:29) and Jennifer St. Pierre (11:22:14 at the 2013 Ironman Worlds as the 21st Canadian female finisher for 60th place in her 35 to 39 age division) of St. Albert.

Among the 35 entries for the 10-km run/walk is Olympic gold-medal winning curler Marc Kennedy of St. Albert.

Kingswood Park is the race venue and the start times are 8 a.m. for the half-marathon walk and 9 a.m. for the half-marathon run, 10-km run/walk and five-km run/walk.

The .5-km kids’ race goes at 11:30 a.m. and pre-registration is not required.

Last year there were 275 finishers for the half marathon run/walk, 10-km run/walk and five-km run/walk.

The half-marathon winner was Paul St. Amant of Bonnyville at 1:23:14 and the fastest female was Shannon Maisano of St. Albert at 1:27:01.

St. Albert’s rock stars are back on the ice Sept. 25 when the season gets underway for the juniors and the mixed and men’s leagues at the St. Albert Curling Club.

Skips Night is Sept. 22 at 7 p.m. and representatives of every rink will receive information on schedules, bonspiels and playoffs.
