The preseason is underway for the St. Albert Tire Warehouse Raiders in the Alberta Midget AAA Hockey League.
Thursday’s face-off is 7 p.m. against the Southside Athletic Club at Akinsdale Arena.
The Raiders also skate Saturday against the Grande Prairie Storm at 2:15 p.m. at Go Auto Arena and Sunday against the Canadian Athletic Club at 5 p.m. at the Akinsdale rink.
Tuesday’s exhibition score against the KC Pats was unavailable at press time.
Saturday’s playoff doubleheader marks the last home matches this season at the St. Albert Rugby Football Club
Kickoff times are 2 p.m. for the third division men against the Parkland Sharks and 4 p.m. for the premier men against the Strathcona Druids.
The SARFC thirds (8-2) finished first in the Edmonton Rugby Union table for an opening-round bye and the Sharks (7-4) crushed the Druids 71-7 in the playoffs.
A heavily fortified lineup of Parkland thirds ended SARFC ‘s five-game winning steak Aug. 11 by a score of 45-8.
The winner plays the Clan (7-3) or Edson Axmen (8-2-1) in the Visser Cup final next Saturday at 11 a.m. at Ellerslie Rugby Park and the ERU champion advances to the Digby Dinnie Cup provincial final Sept. 30 at 11:30 a.m. at Ellerslie.
Two years ago, SARFC swept the Visser and Digby Dinnie championships for the first time since 1997 and the team’s record in 2015 was 12-3.
The Alberta Cup premier north semifinal features the fourth-place SARFC (9-4) first 15 and the sixth-place Druids (6-7).
Results in league play were 25-17 Druids in Sherwood Park and 60-10 for the firsts at SARFC during consecutive weekend matches last month.
The winner battles the first-place Nor’Westers (11-2) in the Ken Ann Cup north final next Saturday at 4:15 p.m. at Ellerslie for a berth in the Labatt’s Cup provincial final Sept. 30 at 4:30 p.m. at Ellerslie.
The Alberta Cup fixtures wrapped up last weekend as SARFC defeated the Irish (1-12) 44-22 in Calgary and the Druids surprised the Nor’Westers 39-38.
SARFC is chasing its fourth straight Labatt’s Cup and fifth since 2010.
Midget 15 Flyers
Monday the St. Albert Super Grip Flyers host the Fort Saskatchewan Rangers in exhibition action in the Alberta Minor Midget AAA Hockey League.
Puck drop is 6:45 p.m. at Akinsdale Arena.
The first league game for the midget 15 Flyers is Oct. 1 at the Lloydminster Rage.
