Justice Film Fest strikes back!

A slate of social justice documentaries every Tuesday in February

For Don Knutson, the chair of the St. Albert Justice Film Festival, one good turn deserves another. The touring festival that brought several social justice documentaries to town last year was so successful that it has returned for another round.

“It went really well. We had an excellent turnout with a lot of positive feedback from it,” he exclaimed, adding, “It’s back!”

The festival started as the Marda Loop Justice Film Festival out of a neighbourhood in Calgary with the intention to offer films on subject matter that raises social consciousness about a variety of human rights, sustainability, environmental and political topics.

That template was enough to inspire it to expand to not only include this city on its tour but it also travels to other destinations as far aloft as Dawson Creek, Fort Macleod, and Sarnia.

As it comes to St. Albert this year, however, it will be changing up its schedule a bit. Last year, the festival was held on a single weekend. The film blitz of six titles was considered a bit much to ask of some audience members.

“We put a lot of films into one weekend! You actually have to be pretty committed to see all the films on one weekend,” he laughed.

That’s why organizers decided that they would offer two films for each of the four Tuesday evenings in February for a total of eight, just to make it a bit easier on the eyes. The films also range in levels of seriousness, something that Knutson says offers a bit of balance so that one evening isn’t super heavy.

“We’ll see how that goes. We’re quite excited about it.”

Each screening will also be hosted, often by people involved in the making of each film. Details are still being worked out for this year’s batch, though. Because social justice is the theme, entry is by donation to the St. Albert Food Bank; however, Knutson said that you could still get in for free.
