Dan Rombough’s power-play goal with 11 seconds left in regulation time for the St. Albert Merchants was the game winner against the Morinville Jets last weekend at the Ray McDonald Sports Centre.

The fifth goal by the Merchants with the man advantage capped off a wild 7-6 victory as the teams combined for 47 infractions and 175 penalty minutes. The Jets led the penalty parade with 25 infractions for 96 minutes. They are the second-most penalized team in the Capital Junior B Hockey League with 1,045 minutes in 24 games, compared to the Merchants’ 874 minutes in 26 games.

Matt Bowles and Casey Reid put the Merchants on top with power-play markers in the opening 3:17 minutes. The Jets roared back with four consecutive goals during a 6:18-minute span, including a pair on the power play, before Alex Hawirko closed out the period for the Merchants.

In the middle frame, after the Jets connected shorthanded, Reid scored and Blair Macuch cashed in on the power play to knot it at 5-5.

The Jets regained the lead early in the third, but Mike Roeleveld tied it up with 9:23 to play.

Rombough’s game winner was his fourth point of the night. Bowles and Macuch drew assists on the play, as the Merchants’ defenceman scored three seconds after the Jets were penalized for tripping.

The winning goalie was Justin Pawlenchuk (11-7, 3.59 GAA). Brad Miller (6-7, 4.21 GAA) was in net for the Jets.

Bowles and Roeleveld finished with three points apiece.

The Jets (13-11), ranked fifth in the west division, were led by Travis Geislinger’s three goals and two assists.

The Merchants (15-8-3) are tied for second in the west. Next weekend they play the North Edmonton Red Wings (15-9-1) Friday at 8 p.m. at Londonderry Arena and the Stony Plain Flyers (2-23) Sunday at 8 p.m. at Akinsdale Arena.

Curtis Peck struck three times on the power play and Thomas Friesen added three assists for the St. Albert Flyers in the 7-3 blowout of the Grande Prairie Storm last weekend in the Alberta Minor Midget AAA Hockey League.

Tristen Gavin potted a pair and Mark Matsuba and Josh Perrott notched singles as the Flyers outshot the Storm 48-25 at Akinsdale Arena. Perrott, Cam Mazur and Nathan Bizeau added two assists apiece. In net was Tyler Boe (5-1-2, 2.56 GAA).

The third win in a row lifted the Flyers (10-5-4) into a second place in the north division, one point behind the SSAC Bulldogs (11-6-3) with a game in hand. The Storm (5-12-2) are ranked 11th in the standings.

The Flyers skate next Saturday against the Oil Kings (9-5-4) in Leduc at 6 p.m.

Ryan Cox of the St. Albert Sabres scored the tying goal on the power play with 50 seconds remaining in last week’s Alberta Major Bantam Hockey League game in Sherwood Park.

Connor Deighton also lit the lamp for the Sabres (4-13-6). Shots were 37-23 for the hometown Flyers (11-5-6). Joshua Dechaine (2-6-2, 4.08 GAA) was in net.
