Miles conference

The St. Albert High Skyhawks and Paul Kane Blues close out the division two Miles conference regular season in Wednesday’s pool A doubleheader at Larry Olexiuk Field.

Kickoff times are 5 p.m. between the Skyhawks (3-2) and Eastglen Blue Devils (0-5) and 7:30 p.m. between Paul Kane (4-1) and Ardrossan Bisons (2-2).

The pool A and B crossover quarter-finals are Oct. 23 at Emerald Hills Regional Park or Johnny Bright Park. The Skyhawks are likely to play the McNally Tigers (4-1) and Paul Kane will probably face the Leduc Tigers (1-4).

The semifinals are Oct. 27 at Johnny Bright and the final is Nov. 3 at Commonwealth Stadium.

The Skyhawks and Paul Kane are coming off big wins Thursday. The Skyhawks tamed the Tigers 42-14 at Johnny Bright and Paul Kane humbled Eastglen 71-6 at Clarke Stadium.

The Skyhawks led 21-7 at halftime in a crucial bounce-back game after losing 42-14 to the pool A O’Leary Spartans (3-1). The touchdown scorers against O’Leary were quarterback Ewan Vanderheide on a 12-yard scramble and backup pivot Adam Callbeck with a one-year run.

Paul Kane emptied the bench against Leduc after leading 55-6 at halftime. The second half was played with running time.

Junior Bulldogs

The first regular season loss since 2011 for the Bellerose Bulldogs in metro Edmonton junior football was Tuesday’s 54-6 shellacking by the Jasper Place Rebels at Johnny Bright Park.

The Rebels also ended four consecutive undefeated championships by the Bulldogs in last year’s 27-11 division one semifinal in the metro Edmonton league.

The only high school junior football team in St. Albert is now 36-2-1 in league and playoffs combined since losing the 2011 semifinal.

The Rebels (3-1), last year’s champions, carved up the Bellerose defence with a double wing in a game that was stopped short due to an ambulance call when Jonas Hazelaar injured his back.

Zach Froese scored on a quarterback designed run for the Bulldogs (2-1-1).

The next game is Tuesday versus the Memorial Marauders (0-4) at 6 p.m. at Larry Olexiuk Field.

Minor football

Today’s tripleheader for St. Albert teams in the Capital District Minor Football Association kicks off at 12:30 p.m. at Larry Olexiuk Field.

The bantam junior varsity Fury (1-3) tackles the Sherwood Park Wolverines (3-0) in the Marv Mills division.

The next game is 3 p.m. between the peewee senior varsity Riders (1-4) and Edmonton Raiders (0-4) in the Susan Morgan division.

At 5 p.m. the bantam senior varsity Palmer 49ers (4-1) line up against the Raiders (1-3) in the Susan Morgan division.

Last weekend in Sherwood Park, the Fury lost 56-28 to the 2016 CDMFA and Tier I provincial champion Rams (5-0). The halftime score was 42-14.
