Running for: Sturgeon County Councillor
Division: Division 1
Years resident in community: 65
Family status: Married 40+ years
Education: Graduated Grade 12
Occupation: Retired City of Edmonton Fire Department.
Q: What was your primary motivation to seek elected office?
Sturgeon County’s Mission Statement was well written and thought out: “To provide quality, cost effective services and “infrastructure”, to meet the diverse needs to the Sturgeon County Community, while improving competitiveness and sustainability.”
This mission statement can no longer be found on the county website. It should be front and center and used as a guideline to promote Sturgeon County. Going back to the core values of the mission statement and improving interactive communication between resident and council is a main motivation for myself to run for Councillor in Division 1.
Q: What skills and experiences have prepared you for this office?
I have had a diverse business background working on my own, operating a successful fire equipment service company, and owning and operating Tim Hortons in Fort Saskatchewan, that is still family run. I have been a director of the Gibbons/Bon Accord Rural Electrification Association, a member of a Youth Justice Committee, and served as a firefighter for 30 years with the City of Edmonton. From rookie to captain, I have worked at all levels, taking and giving direction in a highly stressful position. With my common sense approach, good work ethic, positive attitude and team experience, I am prepared for any challenges that face me.
Q: What do you think are the most important issues to the community at large?
One of the most important and ongoing issue is our road conditions and traffic congestion. This should be foremost, in working towards a solution to the problem.
We need to reevaluate where and how our tax dollars are being spent and allocated, and to strengthen the relationship between residents and county, by listening to the public’s concerns, and hearing their input.
Q: What specific goals will you work to achieve if elected?
Promote Sturgeon County by encouraging businesses to establish and remain in the county.
Readdress the Land Use Bylaw.
Establish a close relationship with Provincial Transportation, and work towards improving our roads and traffic.
Make council more accountable and transparent in the use of our tax dollars. Be more open to resident concerns.
