Christmas Seals struggling to reach goal

Nominations trickling in for SAGE Awards

Christmas is over but the Christmas Seals are still waiting for this city’s Santa to arrive.

The annual campaign of the Lung Association of Alberta and Northwest Territories is running shy of its goal in St. Albert. So far, it has only received about $10,700 — a figure that is about half what it took in at the same time last year. It hopes to garner $900,000 in total.

Deb Steele, director of communications, said charities are hurting all over and serious decisions will likely have to be made.

“We know that we’ll have to look at a reduction in service.”

The non-profit organization works to fight lung disease through public education, funding research, and offering programs and services to assist people with lung cancer, asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. It has already reduced administration costs by not having a receptionist and switching to an automated calling system.

Steele added the campaign doesn’t officially end until Friday so she remains hopeful that more donations will come in by then.

“We don’t know what will happen. Receipts can come in … there might be some major donors. Who knows?”

SAGE Awards still looking for nominees

The Seniors Association of Greater Edmonton is still looking for the public to give some shout-outs and so far all they’ve come up with is silence.

Nominations have been slim for its fifth annual SAGE Awards to recognize metro Edmonton seniors who make the community a better place for everybody.

David Loper, SAGE’s communications co-ordinator, said that St. Albert has some great volunteers and he hopes to see more news, especially from this city.

“I don’t think we’ve had much from anywhere. It’s always a struggle.”

There are several categories including arts and culture, business and entrepreneurship, and education. Last year there were about 30 nominees for all categories combined.

The deadline is Jan. 15. Entry forms can be obtained at the SAGE office at 15 Sir Winston Churchill Square in Edmonton, on its website at, and from local Servus Credit Union locations. For more information, call 780-701-9009.
