Bulldogs football

The Bellerose Bulldogs host the R.F. Staples Thunderbirds of Westlock in Thursday’s exhibition in high school football.

Kickoff is 6 p.m. at Riel Recreation Park.

The Bulldogs will dress several rookies who will play for the Bellerose junior team in the metro Edmonton league.

The Thunderbirds compete in the Wheatland Football League.

Saturday the junior Bulldogs host the Peace Wapiti Academy Titans and Charles Spencer Mavericks of Grande Prairie in a jamboree at the Riel field.

The Bulldogs’ first scrimmage is 12:45 p.m.

Bantam Sabres

Friday’s intersquad game for the bantam AAA St. Albert Gregg Distributors Sabres starts 8 p.m. at Go Auto Arena.

The Alberta Major Bantam Hockey League team has exhibitions against the Sherwood Park Flyers at 5:45 p.m. Sunday in Sherwood Park and Sept. 9 at 3:30 p.m. at Go Auto Arena.

Midget Raiders

The first of two intersquad games Sunday for the midget AAA St. Albert Tire Warehouse Raiders starts 2 p.m. at Akinsdale Arena.

Team Holden plays Team Iginla and at 4:30 p.m. it’s Team Benning versus Team McAmmond.

The first exhibition for the Raiders is Sept. 12 against the KC Pats at 7:30 p.m. at Troy Murray Arena.

Junior B hockey

Tryouts are underway for the Morinville Jets and the auditions for the St. Albert Merchants start 8 p.m. Sunday.

The first exhibitions for the Capital Junior B Hockey League teams are Sept. 8. The Merchants visit the Sherwood Park Knights at 8:15 p.m. and the Jets host the Strathcona Bruins at 8:45 p.m. in the three-team tournament at Ray McDonald Sports Centre.

The Jets also play the Edmonton Mustangs on Sept. 9 at 8:30 p.m. and the Stony Plain Flyers on Sept. 10 at 7:15 p.m. in the tournament.

The Merchants skate Sept. 11 against the Edmonton Royals at Confederation Arena and Sept. 17 against the Knights at Akinsdale Arena. Game times are 8 p.m.

The Merchants and Jets face-off in the CJHL lid-lifter Sept. 22 at 8 p.m. at the Akinsdale rink.

Last season the Jets (27-7-4) finished first and the Merchants (18-16-4) placed fourth in the west division and in the playoffs the fifth-place Flyers (17-18-3) swept the Merchants in the best-of-three qualifying round and knocked off the Jets in the fifth and deciding game in the quarter-finals.
