Incumbent Scott Richardson enters Morinville race

“There’s lots of things left undone I’d still like to be a part of.”

Incumbent Coun. Scott Richardson filed his nomination papers earlier this month to run for town council during the 2021 Morinville municipal election.

First elected in 2017, Richardson is a lifelong Morinville resident and president of the Morinville Minor Baseball Association. He is currently a coach with Sturgeon Minor Hockey and a member of the Rotary Club of Morinville.

Richardson said he enjoyed his term on council but felt the COVID-19 pandemic kept council from finishing much of its agenda.

“There’s lots of things left undone I’d still like to be a part of.”

Richardson said he served as the voice of residents for fiscal responsibility in the last term. When asked what he had accomplished in office, he said he convinced council to defer spending on the splash park for a year and to prioritize local businesses when it came to procurement.

Last May, he proposed a zero-per-cent tax increase that would have used pandemic-related savings to move the town closer to a 1:1.5 residential/non-residential tax split. (His motion was defeated.)

“I look at budgeting and how the town is run from a business perspective,” Richardson said, one he had experience with as owner of Morinville Sports and other companies.

Richardson said his business background gives him people skills and fiscal responsibility, while his training in occupational health and safety helps him understand how to write policy.

If re-elected, Richardson said he will continue to be a strong voice on council for fiscal responsibility and sustainable growth, cutting costs through organizational efficiencies and regional partnerships.

Nominations for the 2021 Morinville election are due Sept. 20. Visit www.morinville.ca/en/town-hall/election.aspx for details.
