All funds raised at the gala support approximately 350 One! International children in two schools in the Khar and Nallasopara slums of Mumbai, India, providing them with medical care, nutrition and education. One! International Poverty Relief began in 2001 when Sherwood Park native Tania Spilchen was in Mumbai for a Computer Science internship placement, while finishing her degree at the University of Alberta. Tania witnessed the extreme poverty in India when she was approached on the street by a little boy begging for food to help his injured brother. Tania did more than give the child some money; she learned about his life, and after buying them some much needed food, returned the following day to visit the injured boy and his siblings in the hospital. When the little boy was well enough to return home, Tania realized how inadequate a word 'home' was to describe their living situation. Their mother had died years earlier, and their father was an alcoholic whom they rarely saw. Tania was unable to walk away from these children and their need, and from these tragic circumstances the One! International school began. Since its humble beginnings, with Tania teaching a handful of students under a tree by the side of the road, the organization has come very far. Now, 11 years later, One! International can boast two functional schools in Mumbai, a staff of over 10 teachers and social workers, and countless hours of support from volunteers around the world. One! is able to provide employment to many students and their families in the day-to-day operations of the schools. One! provides education and nutrition to over 350 students who would otherwise not be in school. Under the theme of 'One Love' for this fundraiser, you will hear firsthand how One! changes the lives of children, teachers and volunteers (in India and Canada). One! presents opportunities for people to spread the feeling of humanity. One! believes that when you help others, you help yourself by the power of positive actions.
