Sue has been with the Gazette for more than 20 years. Beginning as a freelance contributor based in Sturgeon County, she then joined the full-time staff, reporting education and sports for the former Morinville Gazette and contributing features to the St. Albert Gazette

After covering a variety of other beats, including municipal, provincial and federal politics, health, crime and court, Sue was appointed the Gazette’s assistant editor in the early 1990s before taking over the editor’s desk.

During her time with the newspaper, the Gazette and its newsroom and photography staff have been recognized locally, provincially and nationally with a wide variety of awards. Sue has also contributed to the American Press Institute’s community newspaper workshops.

She has lived in St. Albert for 16 years and has two grown children.

Peter Boer

Peter joined the Gazette newsroom in November 2003.

He graduated from the University of Alberta with a BA in psychology. Peter enjoyed university so much he enrolled again, this time at Concordia University in Montreal, where he completed a graduate diploma in journalism in April, 2003.

Before joining the Gazette newsroom, Peter worked in the newsroom of the Edmonton Journal as an intern. He also spent the summer of 2003 as the festival reporter for CBC Radio Edmonton.

Jeff Hansen

Jeff joined the St. Albert Gazette as its sports reporter in 1991.

Previous newspaper stops include the Wetaskiwin Time-Advertiser, Wainwright Star Chronicle and the Golden Star. Prior to embarking on a journalism career, Jeff toiled as a DJ/reporter at radio stations in Weyburn, Sask. and Powell River, B.C.

A St. Albert resident, Jeff attended Entwistle School while growing up on a farm in Moon Lake. The father of three graduated from Frank Maddock High School in Drayton Valley and is a product of the Grant MacEwan College journalism program.

The highlight of Jeff’s stay at the Gazette is not the regular top-three placings in various industry association competitions, but working with a winning team of talented and dedicated staff.

Ashterah Quinn-Martell

Ashterah, the Gazette’s proofreader, spent 25 years at a daily newspaper in Saskatchewan before relocating to British Columbia in 1998.

After several years working at community newspapers and doing freelance graphic design, she and her husband relocated to St. Albert in 2001.

Anna Borowiecki

Anna began freelancing for the Gazette in 2000 and was brought on board full-time in 2003 as the newspaper’s entertainment writer. As a freelancer she covered culture and heritage, education, health and agriculture stories.

Anna is a graduate of NAIT’s Radio and Telvision Arts program and later completed a Bachelor of Arts at the University of Alberta. She has worked for Edmonton dailies as librarian/proofreader and as a features and advertising copy writer. Now firmly entrenched in St. Albert with two teenagers, Anna has become an advocate for the community’s dynamic young talent.

Cory Hare

Cory graduated from the journalism program at the University of Western Ontario in April, 2005. Upon returning home to Alberta, he accepted a temporary placement and freelanced for the Edmonton Journal. He joined the Gazette newsroom in October, 2005.

A native of St. Paul, Alta., Cory also holds a commerce degree from the University of Alberta.

Bryan Alary

Bryan joined the Gazette in 2006 as the paper’s civic affairs reporter. The position provided unique insight into the political and social fabric of the community as he covered issues from annexation and urban planning to the 2007 municipal election.

Bryan started his journalism career in Calgary, writing features and editing at a local publishing company. He found his niche in community journalism when he signed on at the Lacombe Globe, first as a reporter, and later as editor.

In a previous life, Bryan studied printmaking at the University of Calgary and Alberta College of Art & Design. Today most of his visual energies are channelled through his camera lens.

Bryan is the Gazette’s co-editor. He also contributes a regular column and blog about civic affairs.

Kevin Ma

Kevin officially joined the St. Albert Gazette in 2006 after serving internships at the Gazette and the Edmonton Journal.

Kevin earned a degree in Political Science at the University of Alberta and moved on to a master’s of Journalism at Carleton University in 2006, when he wrote a thesis on the state of the Sturgeon River. The thesis is available at the St. Albert Public Library.

Kevin writes about the environment, agriculture and aboriginal affairs. He also regularly contributes features on other topics to the Gazette.

Ryan Tumilty

Born and raised in Markham, Ont. Ryan Joined the Gazette in June 2007.

Ryan completed a Bachelor of Journalism and Mass Communications in 2005 at Carleton University in Ottawa, where he also served as news editor of the campus paper the Charlatan.

After a brief stint in the federal bureaucracy he moved west to a reporter position with the Westlock News in June 2006 before joining the staff at the Gazette.

Ryan covers St. Albert’s neighbours in Sturgeon County as well as the courts and crime.

Scott Hayes

Scott Hayes has been with the Gazette since 2004 when he started as a freelance movie critic. Since joining the newsroom full-time in February 2008, he has continued reviewing films and has had the great pleasure of covering St. Albert's rich and diverse visual arts and community services beats. If you know of - or are involved in - an activity that has cultural benefit or human interest, Scott wants to hear from you.

Scott's reporting experience includes writing for the Paul Kane Paper Plain, the U of A Gateway, the NAIT Nugget and other print and net publications, including the Edmonton Journal, See Magazine, CanadaMovies.net and AskMen.com.

Scott first moved to St. Albert in 1981. He has two awesome children.

Jeremy Broadfield

Jeremy, originally from Calgary, joined the Gazette staff in January, 2008.

In 2005 he enrolled in Journalism Arts at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) in Calgary, majoring in photojournalism. Throughout his second year he freelanced for the Cochrane Eagle weekly newspaper.

Upon graduating in 2007, he took a job as a photographer with the Lloydminster Meridian Booster, a three times a week newspaper on the Alberta-Saskatchewan Border.

James MacLennan

James joined the St. Albert Gazette in the fall of 2008.

After completing internships with the Windsor Star and Edmonton Sun as a student at Loyalist College, James became a freelance photojournalist in Ottawa and worked with Metro News.

James moved to Alberta to freelance with the Sun as a photographer before joining the staff at the Gazette.
