African Gospel Concert with the Congolese-Canadian Group Krystaal

Starting off the evening, the joyous sounds of the local gospel choir "Victory Restoration" will get the audience clapping and in the mood for some uplifting and energetic music. The featured performers, Krystaal, will then take the stage and bring their celebrated, award winning sounds to Edmonton. This will be an evening of music that should leave the audience feeling "on top of the world". The story of the survival of the band members during a corrupt, Zaire dictatorship and hardships of refugee camps is almost as inspiring as their music. Hear them Saturday, May 10 at 7 p.m., in the MacLab Theatre in the Citadel Theatre, 9828 — 101A Ave. Krystaal is an award winning, multi-talented group of three brothers who excel in various genres of music including R&B/Pop, Gospel, Urban and World (African). They are characterized by their tight vocal harmonies and an ability to fit any audience anywhere in the world. The group's founders, brothers Michel, Fabian and Aliston Lwamba, came to Canada from Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of Congo) having experienced many trials and hardships under a corrupt dictatorship. A book entitled Keep On Standing - The Story of Krystaal chronicles their amazing journey. Since forming the music group "Krystaal" in Canada, the Lwambas have become ambassadors for peace and forgiveness, performing all over Canada, the States, Africa and Europe. Krystaal aren't your average R&B singers nor do they belong to the mass produced gospel music of North America. Their energy and African culture brings a fresh sound to gospel music, and their happiness is infectious. Krystaal will also be singing on Sunday, May 11 at 3 p.m. at the Shiloh Baptist Church, 10727 114 Street. Ticket info for Saturday’s concert is available from Tix on the Square, 420-1757.

Comedy

Kids in the Hall

The watershed comedy troupe of the 1990s return to their live performance roots after six years. Featuring: Dave Foley, Bruce McCulloch, Kevin McDonald, Mark McKinney, and Scott Thompson. Live As We'll Ever Be represents a new era in the troupe's collaboration, and is comprised of completely fresh material which simultaneously reflects who they are now and their patently off-kilter take on ordinary life. Favorite characters from the television series appear in entirely new situations, sharing the stage with new personas destined for the same level of cult adoration. "The Kids" first exploded into the American consciousness when their half-hour sketch comedy show debuted on cable's HBO in 1989. The troupe's distinctly edgy humor broke new ground with their characterizations of secretaries, prostitutes, gays, drug users, and oddball creations. Join The Kathies, Headcrusher, the Sales Guys, Buddy Cole, and people you've never met before (but somehow recognize from your everyday life) on an adventure into the bizarre and side-splittingly funny.

Edmonton Film Society

A non-profit group dedicated to keeping the "silver screen"/Hollywood of yesteryear in the public eye. Each movie is preceded by a short, informative talk about the film. The Spring 2008 series is titled: Jolly Good Shows. Ye Olde British Comedy: From the mid-forties to the closing of the fifties, British filmmakers delivered a payload of sharply delineated, tightly wrapped rib-ticklers.
They were enjoyable then, and the same holds true today. Hence, we dial in the BBC (Britain’s Best Comedies). The formula for success was deceptively simple: devise unusual, even bizarre, plots, set them against a closely-observed background, and populate them with amiable eccentrics who speak the King’s English colourfully and precisely. Monday, May 12: Passport to Pimlico (1949, 85 min., PG.) Stanley Holloway, Margaret Rutherford. A London neighbourhood discovers its hereditary independence from Britain, and the inhabitants set up their own little country. The brilliant satire is carried along on a wave of zany inventiveness. The cast is highlighted by Rutherford as the history teacher quivering in ecstasy over discovery of the ancient charter. Director: Henry Cornelius. All films begin at 8 p.m. Royal Alberta Museum auditorium. Series membership tickets: $25 (eight films). Single show: General admission: $5; Seniors (65 & over) $4; Students $4.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show

It’s primarily the music in The Rocky Horror Picture Show that has propelled it to cult status, making it one of the biggest cult films of all time. Set during Nixon’s resignation, the campy sci-fi horror musical features heroine Janet Weiss (Susan Sarandon) and hero Brad Majors (Barry Bostwick), a young conservative couple who are driving to see their friend Dr. Everett Scott (Jonathan Adams). They have a flat tire in the middle of a thunderstorm. Realising the spare isn’t worthy, they decide to stop by a castle they just passed and phone for help. They are greeted by Riff Raff (Richard O’Brien) and his sister Magenta (Patricia Quinn), the handyman and domestic respectively, for Dr. Frank-N-Furter (Tim Curry) who is the master of the castle. Dr. Frank-N-Furter and his entourage are really sweet transvestites, er, aliens, from the planet Transexual, in the Transylvania galaxy. Besides dressing up in high heels and stockings, and wearing makeup, Dr. Frank-N-Furter is creating a monster, er, man, Rocky Horror (Peter Hinwood). When Brad and Janet stumble onto his plans, he takes them prisoner and seduces them. Unfortunately, his creation decides to rebel against him as Brad and Janet start to loosen up. Things go further downhill for Dr. Frank-N-Furter, culminating in his death at the hands of Riff Raff who is the "new commander" replacing Frank-N-Furter for having "too extreme" a lifestyle. Rated: 14A. One show only, midnight p.m. on Saturday, May 17. Tickets now on sale. Garneau Theatre, 8712 — 109 St.
