Executive chef Rino Lam is the force behind Nineteen XIX named as one of the 50 Best Brunch Restaurants in Canada.

Looking for a trendy brunch in your own back yard?

Open Table, an online restaurant reservation service, just announced it designated St. Albert’s Nineteen XIX as one of the 50 Best Brunch Restaurants in Canada for 2017.

“It was quite a surprise. Across Canada this is a big deal – being one of the Top 50 across Canada. On the list there were so many good restaurants, so we must be doing something right,” said executive chef Rino Lam.

Located on Bellerose Drive, XIX features upscale global dining in a casual setting. Three of its most popular brunch dishes are the Five Spice Bao Benny, the Banana Bread Toast and the XIX Big Breakfast.

The only other restaurant in the capital region making the list was Edmonton’s Canteen, a provider of comfort food. The Calgary-Banff area also attracted ten locations.

The eateries selected spanned six provinces across Canada and reflected the opinions of about 480,000 qualifying reviews across the country.

Ontario leads the pack with 20 Best Brunch Restaurants followed by Alberta at 12, and Quebec and British Columbia with eight each. Manitoba and Newfoundland were also represented.

XIX serves brunch every Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Reservations recommended. Call 780-569-1819.

Prairie Gardens is launching its annual Fire Roasters Experience on Father’s Day, June 18 at its Bon Accord location.

Chef Scott Downey, now in the process of opening Butternut Tree, a new restaurant located near the Alberta Legislature, will cook an eclectic longtable gourmet dinner from locally sourced products.

The French cuisine trained chef is planning a five-course dinner including an appetizer, salad, two entrees and a dessert paired with Canadian wines.

Fire Roasters gets its name from the food cooked outdoors on a wood-fired cob oven, wood grills and an infiernillo wood-fired oven.

Prices range from $65 to $70. Call 780-921-2272 for more information or register at https://prairiegardens.org/.
