The Alberta Schools’ Athletic Association 4A women’s basketball championship tips off at 5 p.m. Thursday for the Paul Kane Blues and St. Albert Skyhawks in Lethbridge.

The No. 9 Blues play the No. 8 Bishop Carroll Cardinals of Calgary and the No. 7 Skyhawks hoop it up with the No. 10 Medicine Hat Kwahommies in the round of 16.

Friday at 9 a.m. the Blues will face the No. 1 Jasper Place Rebels or the No. 16 Lloydminster Barons in the quarter-finals or consolation bracket.

Friday the Skyhawks line up against the No. 2 Lethbridge Collegiate Institute Clippers or the No. 15 Charles Spencer Mavericks of Grande Prairie in the 9 a.m. consolation bracket or 11 a.m. quarter-finals.

The Skyhawks and Blues are among five Edmonton zone provincial qualifiers as the third and fourth reps, respectively, after the Skyhawks beat the Blues by two points in last week’s playoff at Paul Kane.

Jasper Place, 31-0, is first, Strathcona Lords are second and Spruce Grove Panthers are fifth.

Jasper Place (12-0) defeated the Lords (6-6) by 32 points in the metro division one final and the Blues (7-4) and Skyhawks (6-5) were semifinalists.

The ASAA 4A top-10 rankings are as follows: Jasper Place No. 1, Clippers No. 2, Western Canada Redhawks of Calgary No. 3, Centennial Coyotes of Calgary No. 4, Blues No. 5, Raymond Comets No. 6, Skyhawks No. 7, Cardinals No. 8, Lords No. 9 and Kwahommies No. 10.

Last year at provincials, the Skyhawks were seeded No. 7 and finished 3-1 for fifth place in their third 4A season after winning a record fourth-straight 3A provincial banner.

The Blues were the No. 11 seeds in 2016 and posted one win and two losses in the fourth provincials in five years for the consolation finalists the previous two years.

The St. Albert Skyhawks and Morinville Wolves qualified for the Alberta Schools’ Athletic Association 3A men’s basketball championship.

The 12-team tournament starts Thursday in Medicine Hat but the draw wasn’t available at press time.

The Skyhawks, a metro Edmonton division two team and 3A honourable mention in the ASAA rankings, are the No. 3 Edmonton zone seeds after beating the Beaumont Bandits 83-80 for the provincial berth.

Morinville is the North Central zone champion.
