The St. Albert Cardinals have home-field advantage for the midget, bantam and peewee AAA Tier I provincials this weekend at Legion Memorial Park.
The midget and peewee tournaments start at 9 a.m. Friday and the finals, if there are no tiebreakers, are 3 p.m. Sunday.
The bantam draw begins at 9 a.m. Saturday and ends with Monday’s final, barring any tiebreakers, at 3 p.m.
The opening ceremonies are 6 p.m. Saturday.
Be advised that parking will be at a premium during provincials at Legion park.
The winning teams will represent Alberta at nationals (Aug. 14 to 18 at Magog, Que. for midgets and Aug. 22 to 26 at Vaughan, Ont. for bantams and London, Ont. for peewees) and the second-place finishers advance to westerns (Aug. 15 to 18 at Spruce Grove for bantams and Altona, Man. for peewees and Aug. 22 to 24 in Coquitlam, B.C. for midgets).
The midget AAA and bantam AAA Cardinals will play the following teams in their respective round robins at provincials and for coverage of the peewee AAA Cardinals at provincials, see page 88.
In pool A the Cardinals are up to bat Friday against Fort McMurray at noon and the Spruce Grove White Sox at 6 p.m.
Saturday the Cardinals face SEEBA 1 at 3 p.m.
The top two teams in pools A and B meet in Sunday’s semifinals at 9 a.m. and noon for a date in the 3 p.m. final
Pool B consists of the Calgary Dinos, Sherwood Park Dukes, Okotoks Dawgs White and Calgary Rockies.
The Cardinals, last year’s Tier 1 provincial finalists and Western Canadian gold medallists, finished first in the NorWest league at 26-5 and the team’s overall record is 39-13.
In the five-team tournament the Cardinals play ball Saturday against the Spruce Grove White Sox at 9 a.m. and Red Deer Braves at 7 p.m., Sunday against Okotoks Dawgs Black at 3 p.m. and Monday against the Sherwood Park A’s at noon.
The top two teams move on to the 3 p.m. final Monday.
The Cardinals placed second in the provincial qualification round at 19-6 and Okotoks was first at 21-3.
The Cardinals’ overall record is 26-18.
