Large item drop-off
City residents can ditch their unwanted Wurlitzers and unicycles this Saturday by hauling them to the public works yard.
The city is holding its twice-annual large item drop-off event this July 26 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
It’s an event meant to give folks a chance to get rid of items too big to fit in their trash bins without hauling them to the dump themselves, said Christian Benson, the city’s solid waste programs co-ordinator. Typically, this means mattresses, appliances and ugly couches.
Benson said this event was meant for stuff that’s completely unusable and fit for the dump. Still-decent items should be saved for the annual Take It or Leave It events.
“The only thing we don’t accept is anything with Freon in it,” he said.
Building materials, propane tanks, gas-powered lawn equipment, and commercial or non-residential waste will also be turned away.
Residents will need to turn in two garbage tags per large item, Benson noted. Tags will not be available at the event, but can be bought at Servus Credit Union Place, Fountain Park Recreation Centre and city hall.
Crews typically get about 350 visitors, 25 tonnes of trash and eight tonnes of recyclable scrap metal per drop-off event, Benson said.
The next large item drop-off event is Sept. 27.
