Pharmacist Ashley Davidson would argue that she still has lots to do. But already her portfolio shows no shortage of achievements.
Only recently, the owner of the Shoppers Drug Mart pharmacy in Mission Hill Plaza was recognized with a Future of Pharmacy award.
Presented annually by the Alberta College of Pharmacists, the award recognizes up to three pharmacists who have been in practice for less than five years.
Recipients must have demonstrated strong leadership and role model skills, and offer extraordinary promise to the profession.
“It’s definitely a great honour to receive the award amongst all the accomplished pharmacists,” said Davidson. “It made me feel that there was so much more that I need to do. I have to live up to it now.”
A native of St. Albert, Davidson graduated from the University of Alberta in 2010 and started her work at a pharmacy in the south side of Edmonton.
During this time, she created a pilot project with Alberta Health Services Palliative Home Care that provided dying patients with better access to their medication from home.
She also obtained her additional prescribing authority (APA), which she has since incorporated into her business. This allows her more flexibility with renewing prescriptions and adapting pills to a patient’s needs, she said.
“That can open up the physician’s time as well as the medi-centre’s,” she said. “It can help make the process streamlined and benefit the patient.”
She took over the local pharmacy in September 2013.
Davidson said it’s important to work with both local patients and physicians. In the future, she looks to provide more services to the community on smoking cessation, as well as travel medicine and vaccination.
She also wants to work with residents toward better blood pressure and diabetes control, she said.
“I grew up in St. Albert, I was raised here, so the opportunity to come back and make an impact on the community has been something I really wanted for a long time,” she said.
