The St. Albert Drillers run the floor in tonight’s junior B female opener in the Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League.

Faceoff is 9 p.m. against the Capital Region Saints of Edmonton at Akinsdale Arena.

The junior B circuit consists of three teams who play two junior A teams and three senior teams in a 15-game schedule that ends June 21.

Last year the Drillers placed second at 8-6 behind the 9-3 Calgary Cardinals and at the four-team provincial tournament in St. Albert finished 0-4.

Shayla Michayla of the Drillers was the league’s top point producer with 40 in 13 games and teammate Brooke Huber led all scorers with 24 goals in 12 games.

Stars huddle up

The St. Albert Stars of the Alberta Football League are hosting a spring camp this weekend at Riel Recreation Park.

Saturday’s session runs from 4 to 6 p.m. and Sunday’s scrimmage kicks off at 4:30 p.m. More than 35 players are expected for both days.

The team’s 45-man roster features 30 returnees from the 6-4 AFL finalists.

Linebacker Keith Matchem was the AFL’s leading tackler and Erik Kyler, the team’s defensive MVP, had six interceptions and three pick-six touchdowns.

The Stars finished 6-4 overall after losing the AFL championship game 41-16 to the undefeated Calgary Gators.

The Stars have scheduled a pre-season game May 31 at the Riel turf field and the June 7 league lid-lifter against the Gators will be played in St. Albert or Edmonton.

The AFL has expanded to eight teams with the Fort McMurray Monarchs joining the Stars, Gators, Lloydminster Vandals, Edmonton Stallions, Calgary Wolfpack, Central Alberta Buccaneers and Grande Prairie Drillers.
