10-miler Sunday

The deadline to register online for the 29th annual St. Albert 10-Mile Road Race and third annual six-kilometre fun run is Thursday at www.zone4.ca.

As of Monday 299 runners had registered for the 10-miler and nine for the fun run.

Sunday’s 10-miler starts at 9:30 a.m. on Grandin Road across from Grandin Park Plaza and the fun run goes 10 minutes after the main race or once all the 10-milers have left the starting gate.

The 10-mile registration record of 976 was set in 1998.

Last year 385 runners finished the 10-miler and 23 completed the fun run.

Jason Jama of Edmonton was the 10-mile winner in 54 minutes and two seconds and the fastest female was Alexandra Gordichuk of Edmonton at 1:02:47 for 25th place overall.

Marc Meunier was the top St. Albert finisher at 58:05 for eighth place overall.

Eleven runners completed the 10-miler in less than one hour.

The 10-miler, hosted by the St. Albert Road Runners and Triathlon Club, is a fixture in the Timex Alberta Road Race Series and was a top-10 finalist for Alberta’s best road race in 2013.

City playdowns

The 51st annual Edmonton and area Tournament of Champions is underway at the Jasper Place Curling Club for St. Albert rinks skipped by Craig King, Doug McLennan and Lauren Jenkyns.

King is the defending men’s champion, McLennan lost last year’s mixed final and Jenkyns is the 2013 Dominion Curling Club provincial women’s champion and the B-event qualifier at this year’s Dominion northern playdowns.

All three rinks are perennial President’s Cup playoff champions at the St. Albert Curling Club.

Four qualifiers in the 12-team men’s, mixed and women’s double-knockout format advance to Tuesday’s semifinals at 7 p.m.

The finals are Wednesday at 7 p.m.

Visit www.jasperplacecurling.ca for schedules and results.

RunWild races

Online registration ends April 29 at midnight to enter one of five races at the fourth annual Leading Edge RunWild on May 4 in St. Albert.

Visit www.runwild.ca to register for the 42.2-kilometre marathon, 21.1-km half-marathon run/walk, 10-km run/walk, five-km run/walk or the WildOnes Kids MaraFun for six- to 12-year-olds.

Last year’s online registration total of 1,762 eclipsed the 2012 mark of 1,622 and the inaugural 1,650 competitors in 2011.

The RunWild is hosted by Leading Edge Physiotherapy in support of Edmonton’s Zebra Child Protection Centre and the St. Albert 50+ Club.
