Midget AA final
Game two in the best-of-five Northern Alberta Midget AA Hockey League final between the St. Albert Crusaders and Peace River Royals starts at 2:30 p.m. today at Akinsdale Arena.
Game three is 12 p.m. Sunday at Akinsdale.
The score from Fridayís series opener in St. Albert was unavailable at press time.
If needed, games four and five are April 4 and 5 in Peace River.
The Crusaders (22-4-6) and Royals (23-8-1) were the top teams in their respective divisions in league play.
Going into the series the Crusaders were 6-1 and the Royals were 6-2 in the playoffs.
At provincials last weekend in Wainwright the Crusaders defeated the Royals 7-4 in their tournament opener.
Matt Havens tallied twice and Elias Chaulk, Curtis Peck, Cam Mazur, Zach Webb and Zach Dechaine notched singles. Peck also added three assists.
The Crusaders outshot the Royals 40-27. Connor Mckay and Emerson Eady split time in net.
In pool A the Crusaders finished 2-2 for third place and the Royals placed fourth at 1-2-1.
In the league playoffs Havens led all scorers after seven games with 17 points. Peck was tied for second with 16 points and Mazur had 13.
Havens and Peck shared the team lead in goals with seven apiece.
Mckay (5-1) ranked near the top in goals-against average at 1.67.
Megan Lauer and Quin Kroschinski of St. Albert are raising the bar at the Western Canadian Championships for Olympic weightlifting this weekend in Winnipeg.
Lauer and Kroschinski qualified with totals to allow them to compete at westerns.
Both lifters are medal contenders based on their seasonís best totals.
They train at the Olympic Power & Fitness Club in north Edmonton.
The St. Albert Storm kicks off the midget spring league season in todayís exhibition against the Lloydminster Red Dogs in the Capital District Minor Football Association.
Start time is 3 p.m. at Fuhr Sports Park in Spruce Grove.
In the midget league the Storm are among three Tier 2 teams and the Ice Dogs are part of the five-team Tier 1 division.
The Stormís first Tier 2 game is April 5 against the West Edmonton Raiders at 3 p.m. in Spruce Grove.
The Storm have no home games scheduled at Riel Recreation Park.
The team roster features 17 Grade 9, 12 Grade 10 and nine Grade 11 players.
