Skyhawks hoops

The St. Albert Skyhawks men's basketball tournament wraps up today with eight games rattling the rim at the SkyDome.

The semifinals are 11:30 a.m. and 1:15 p.m., the consolation final is 4:45 p.m., the third-place game is 6:30 p.m. and the final is 8:15 p.m.

The eight-team draw features the Strathcona Christian Academy Eagles, ranked fifth in 2A, Edmonton Christian Lions, ranked fourth in 3A, Archbishop Jordan Scots, Spruce Grove Panthers, West Central of Rocky Mountain House and three honourable mentions in the 3A rankings: Fort McMurray Miners, St. Peter The Apostle Spartans and the host Skyhawks.

The tournament is also a fundraiser initiative for Hawks Have Heart. The goal is to raise $5,000 for the Alberta Cancer Foundation and the tournament is one of several February events at St. Albert Catholic High School in support of the campaign honouring the memory of Amanda Bruneau. The sister-in-law of Skyhawks’ head coach and teacher, Evan Holstein, died Jan. 18 at age 19, a few months after being diagnosed with adrenocortical carcinoma. The rare and aggressive cancer originates in the cortex of the adrenal gland.

The Raiders start their best-of-three opening round series next week against the third or fourth team in the north.

Basketball at PK

The Paul Kane Blues host the Archbishop MacDonald Marauders in Tuesday’s doubleheader in metro Edmonton high school division one basketball.
