St. Albert Gazette photographer April Bartlett earned two awards from the Alberta Weekly Newspapers Association last week.

Bartlett won first place in the sports category for a shot of a diving Matt Edwards, catcher for the St. Albert Senior Cardinals. The shot was taken last June at Legion Memorial Park.

Bartlett also earned a third-place recognition in the spot news category.

Gazette publisher Brian Bachynski said Bartlett consistently produces quality work.

“When you look at April’s photography, you'd think she must be the luckiest person around – she always seems to be in the right place at the right time to get that perfect shot,” he said.

“Those pictures don’t happen by chance. They come from April’s skills and patience. She has a trained eye and an awareness for her surroundings. That's how she continually produces quality photography.”

A panel of four Calgary-based photographers provided the judging for the awards, which were presented in six categories at the association’s annual conference last weekend in Calgary. The association represents more than 120 community newspapers in Alberta and the Northwest Territories.

Bartlett began working full-time as a Gazette photographer in 1994. She has won numerous awards during her career.
