High school basketball resumes after the exam break with the third annual Skyhawks Invitational Tournament.
The 12-team women’s draw features four games at Paul Kane High School on Thursday, starting at 10 a.m.
At 2 p.m. the Paul Kane Blues play the Archbishop Jordan Scots or Jasper Place Rebels in the A bracket.
The rest of the 20-game tournament will be played at the SkyDome. The host Skyhawks tip things off at 12 noon against the Louis St. Laurent Barons.
A win by the Skyhawks would put the No. 4-ranked 4A team in Alberta in Thursday’s 4 p.m. match against the Medicine Hat Kwahommies in the A bracket.
Friday’s semifinals are 10 a.m. and 8 p.m.
Saturday’s finals are the 3 p.m. consolation, 5 p.m. third-place game and 7 p.m. championship tilt.
Participating teams include the Bev Facey Falcons, ranked seventh in 4A, Edmonton Christian Lions, ranked second in 3A, St. Francis Xavier Rams, Grande Prairie Composite Totems, Bishop O’Byrne Bobcats of Calgary and the Sturgeon Heights Huskies of Winnipeg.
Sturgeon Heights makes its debut at 6 p.m. Thursday against Edmonton Christian or Grande Prairie at the SkyDome.
White Out Night
High school basketball products from St. Albert will hoop it up for the MacEwan University Griffins on White Out Night against the Keyano Huskies of Fort McMurray in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference.
The first 750 fans receive a free “proud GrifFAN” T-shirt.
Game times are 6 p.m. for the women and 8 p.m. for the men at the City Centre Campus.
Paul Kane alumni Kelly Fagan and Tyler Wise and St. Albert Skyhawks’ alumnae Katie Burak, Amber Easthope, Paige Knull, and Kendall Lydon play for MacEwan.
The St. Albert chapter of the Canadian Progress Club hosts its fourth annual Pond Hockey Championship on Saturday at Lacombe Lake Park.
The fundraiser has evolved from eight teams its first year to 40 teams competing in a three-on-three round-robin format.
Monies raised go to a variety of charitable organizations supported by the Canadian Progress Club.
The tournament runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is open to the public.
Sarasota Realty, a co-sponsor, is inviting initiation and novice St. Albert Minor Hockey Association teams to check out the action and enjoy free sleigh rides, hot chocolate and team pictures.
Hudson’s Tap House is also running a beer gardens on site.
