Junior B game
Sunday the St. Albert Merchants host the Leduc Riggers in the Capital Junior B Hockey League.
Game time is 8 p.m. at Akinsdale Arena.
The first-place Merchants (25-2-1) are 13-1-1 on home ice.
Friday the Merchants played the Beverly Warriors at Londonderry Arena, but the score was unavailable at press time.
The 14th straight win by the Merchants was 6-0 against the Strathcona Bruins last Sunday in Fultonvale.
Justin Pawlenchuk (17-1, 2.34 GAA) stopped 21 shots for his second shutout and the team’s fifth of the season.
Mitch McNamara sniped two of his three goals with the man advantage and Josh Jewell and Brent McGugan netted their team-leading 19th goals as the visitors finished 4-for-8 on the power play.
Thomas Rotundo also scored, Liam McNamara added three assists and Dan Rombough had a pair of helpers.
The puck drops 8 a.m. Thursday at the John Reid Memorial Tournament at Servus Credit Union Place.
The 36th annual bantam AAA tournament includes HC Kometa Brno of the Czech Republic, Los Angeles Jr. Kings, Dallas Stars Elite and Phoenix Jr. Coyotes.
HC Kometa Brno has an exhibition scheduled Tuesday against the Canadian Athletic Club at 7:15 p.m. at Northstar Hyundai Arena.
The 16-team draw is four divisions split into two conferences to determine the playoff pairings in the A, B and C brackets.
The John Reid conference features the host St. Albert Gregg Distributor Sabres, HC Kometa Brno, Okanagan Hockey Academy (Penticton) and Winnipeg Monarchs in the Hoof & Nail Farrier Supplies Ltd division and Phoenix, Burnaby Winter Club Bruins, Lloydminster Heat and Calgary Flames in the Skybox Grill division.
The Jarome Iginla conference consists of Dallas, Pursuit of Excellence Academy (Kelowna), SSAC Southgate Lions and Calgary Bisons in the SVS Group LLP division and Los Angeles, Spruce Grove PAC Saints, Notre Dame Hounds and the defending champion North Shore Winter Club Hawks in the C2 Homes Ltd. division.
Thursday the Sabres play Winnipeg at 11 a.m. and HC Kometa Brno at 8 p.m. and Friday they face-off against the Okanagan Hockey Academy at 2:15 p.m.
Thursday’s opening ceremonies start at 7 p.m. at Northstar Hyundai Arena and the recipient of the sixth annual John Reid Society Scholarship will be announced.
The tournament was renamed in Reid’s memory in 2004.
The final is next Sunday at 2 p.m.
The only St. Albert team to win the tournament was the 1983 Territorial Leasing Sabres.
