Flyers tie Rage
Ryan Cox of the St. Albert Flyers scored shorthanded halfway through the third period to tie the visiting Lloydminster Rage at one apiece last weekend in the Alberta Minor Midget AAA Hockey League.
Sean Richards set-up Cox’s 13th goal and 33rd point of the season. Richards is the team leader in points with 34 in 20 games.
Matt Murray (7-1-3, 2.18 GAA) faced a game-high 42 shots.
At the Christmas break the Flyers (11-4-5) are second and the Rage (9-5-5) share fourth place in the north standings.
The next game is Jan. 6 versus CAC United Cycle (9-8-2) at 8:15 p.m. at Millwoods Arena.
Five goals were not enough for the St. Albert Slash to defeat the Lloydminster Steelers on Sunday in the Alberta Major Midget Female Hockey League.
Rachel Rochat tallied three times and Jennifer Gaeckle scored twice in the 8-5 loss at the Border City.
The Slash (5-13-5) led 2-0 after the first and 4-2 in the second before the Steelers (11-8-4) rattled off four unanswered goals during a 2:50-minute span before the period ended.
Kennedy Newton, Jenna Jewell and Miranda Gaudet had two assists apiece as the Slash suffered their third-straight loss.
The Slash were outshot 33-29. In net was Natalie Bender (1-7-1, 3.95 GAA).
The Slash resume league play next weekend against the Peace County Storm (8-11-3) in Grande Prairie.
Midget AA teams
St. Albert’s midget AA teams will carry their winning streaks into the new year after posting victories last weekend before the Christmas break in the Northern Alberta Midget AA Hockey League.
The Crusaders (17-2-3) are winners of eight straight and undefeated in 14 games after blasting the winless West Yellowhead Rockies 12-4 in Hinton.
Matt Havens was the top scorer with three goals and four assists and Tristan Gavin had one goal and five assists for the Clean Harbors division leaders.
Cam Mazur and Tyler Mork potted a pair each and Brendan Bow, Zac Dechaine, Cole Rochat and Curtis Peck notched singles.
Shots were 69-43 for the Crusaders. In net was Connor Mckay (10-1-2, 2.22 GAA).
The next game is Jan. 5 against the Slave Lake Thunder (12-7-1) at 10:45 a.m. at Akinsdale Arena.
The Blues (15-5-2) posted their fifth in a row and are undefeated in six after the 9-2 rout of the host Sherwood Park Oilers (14-6-2).
Steve Cretain pumped in four goals and Jake Mercier registered five assists for the second-place Inside Edge division team.
Liam Thomas tallied twice and Brad Holmes, Maverick Fewchuk and Devyn Myck also connected in the penalty-filled affair. Four of the team’s goals, including a pair by Cretain, were scored on the power play.
The shot count was 38-32 for the visitors. In net was Keaton Aubin (9-2-2, 3.04 GAA).
Friday the Blues host the Beaumont Braves (8-9-4) at 7:45 p.m. at Northstar Hyundai Arena.
