Midget 15 Flyers

The St. Albert Flyers close out their three-game homestand today against the Lloydminster Rage in the Alberta Minor Midget AAA Hockey League.

Faceoff is 1:15 p.m. at Akinsdale Arena.

The Flyers (11-4-4) are four points back of the first-place Leduc Oil Kings (14-3-2) in the north standings and the Rage (9-5-4) are fourth overall.

Last weekend the Flyers posted wins of 8-1 against the Grande Prairie Storm (3-12-3) and 5-1 against the Camrose Vikings (0-15-3) in St. Albert.

Zach Sherburne potted a pair and Sean Richards scored once and added three helpers against the Storm to end a three-game losing streak.

Max Salpeter, Zach Webb, Ryan Cox, Ethan Marino and Dylan Huot also scored and Matt Murray (7-1-2, 2.30 GAA) faced 24 shots.

Richards, Cox, Jake Warawa, Jacob Waldbillig and Jaedon Leslie filled the net against Camrose.

Webb had two assists and Joshua Dechaine (4-3-2) stopped 32 shots.

Richards and Cox are first and second in team scoring with 33 and 32 points, respectively.

Richards also leads in goals with 14 and Cox and Leslie have 12 apiece.

Slash shut out

The St. Albert Slash suffered their second straight shutout loss and fourth of the season in Sundayís 1-0 setback to the Lloydminster Steelers in the Alberta Major Midget Female Hockey League.

The Steelers scored in the first period and shots were 26 apiece at Northstar Hyundai Arena.

In net for the Slash was Sydney Williams (4-6-4, 2.29 GAA).

The Slash (5-12-5) and Steelers (10-8-3) meet again this Sunday at 3:45 p.m. in the Border City.

The Slash are 0-2-1 against the Steelers this season.

Midget AA teams

St. Albertís midget AA teams skate into the Christmas break with games on the road this weekend.

The Crusaders (16-2-3) travel to Hinton today to play the West Yellowhead Rockies (0-15-1) at 1 p.m.

Sunday the Blues (14-5-2) visit the Sherwood Park Oilers (14-5-2) at 6 p.m.

The Crusaders are first in the Clean Harbors division and the Blues are third in the Inside Edge division.

The Crusaders have won seven straight and are undefeated in 13 games. Their last loss was 6-4 to the KC Colts (20-0-2), the top Inside Edge team, on Oct. 24.

The Blues are winners of four in a row and are undefeated in five since losing 5-3 to the Colts on Nov. 27.

Zone 5 hockey

Six local male peewee AA hockey players will lace up the skates for Zone 5 (Black Gold/Yellowhead) at the 2014 Alberta Winter Games.

The lineup of players born in 2001 includes defencemen Kyle Fulton and Justin MacDonald and forwards Kye Buchanan, Kyle Gilowski and Brady Nicholas of St. Albert and defenceman Kyle Lawrence of Sturgeon County.

The coaching staff features Mike Cherniwchan as director of operations and Matt Bachewich as coach mentor.

Zone tryout camps in December determined the eight zone teams for the Feb. 6 to 9 multi-sport event in Banff and Canmore.

There were 165 hopefuls at the Zone 5 tryouts.
