Build school elsewhere, leave Erin Ridge alone

An open letter to Mayor Nolan Crouse and city council members:
My family and I have recently taken residence in your city of St. Albert. A beautiful community, I must say.
Great care was taken by my husband and I to find a perfect home for our young family. We have just settled into our new house on Essex Close. We chose this house out of the many that we had seen for a few reasons. One of them being the awesome soccer field and how close it is to our home. As well, I work at the Sturgeon hospital, so the proximity to work is ideal. Looking out of my bedroom window I can see both of these landmarks. My husband and I talked about our boys being able to run around in the field and play. This makes me so happy. How quickly my feelings changed after hearing about a school development in that very field. I said to my husband, “Now we might have to move again.”
I am opposed to the building of a new school in the Eldorado field. I have several concerns, first of which, it seems like such a small area to build a school and still have room for a field and a parking lot.
Secondly, parking is already a huge concern in this area. As an employee at the hospital I myself have had to park on Erin Ridge Drive. Employees park on this street everyday and it extends all the way to Eldorado Drive.
If there was a school there, the school staff, parents, and buses would have to park in the area as well. We came from living on the north side of Edmonton, in a newer area. There was a lot of construction we dealt with the entire six years that we were living there. That’s another reason we chose this older area of Erin Ridge was that we didn’t want to deal with that anymore. If a school is to be built then we shall have to deal with the pain of construction right outside our crescent. As well in the past we have lived next to a junior and senior high school. I told myself “never again.” I do not enjoy sharing my neighbourhood with a school.
I feel there are other great and reasonable options for the development of this school elsewhere.
Since this is a K-9 French school they have stated it does not matter about the location of the school since the majority of the kids are bused in. So why not put it somewhere else?
Where? Well, two options I can think of come to mind. One, build it beside the other school going up in Erin Ridge. Obviously that area is zoned for a school. They can share a field, and playground area.
Two, the lovely huge field in Kingswood. If the city and developer actually talked about it they may be able to work out a solution. There is a lot of space there and I don’t think it would be as much of an adaptation in that neighbourhood as it would be for us. The residents of the area surrounding Eldorado field have grown to have this field be part of their home, and lifestyle in this area was developed many years ago. We love the mature feeling of it all. Start new construction and that will be all taken away.
Thank you, for what you do for our fine city. And, thank you for listening to my family’s concerns.
