Lacrosse games

The junior A and senior B St. Albert Miners run the floor this week in the Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League.

Thursday the junior A Miners host the Sherwood Park Titans in exhibition play at 8 p.m. at Northstar Hyundai Arena.

Friday the senior B Miners battle the Edmonton Outlaws in the league opener at 8 p.m. at Bill Hunter Arena.

Okinawan karate

The 18th annual Spirit of the North karate seminar is underway in St. Albert.

The training sessions end Thursday at the Desa School of Karate.

This weekend at Servus Credit Union Place, Friday’s black-belt competition starts at 6 p.m. and Saturday’s coloured-belt tournament kicks into action at 10 a.m.

The guest instructors for the week-long traditional Okinawan karate event are Sensei Yoichiro Kuniyoshi, a fourth-degree black belt, and Master Satoshi Kinjo, a sixth-degree black belt.

Rugby fixtures

A late spring thaw has forced the Edmonton Rugby Union to reschedule this weekend’s season-opening fixtures because of poor field conditions.

The St. Albert Rugby Football Club was to scrum down against the Rockers in the women’s first division at the Nor’Westers Rugby Club and the Strathcona Druids in the men’s second division at Lynn Davies Rugby Park in Sherwood Park.

The revised ERU lid-lifter is now May 11 at Ellerslie Rugby Park and will feature three St. Albert matches: third division men versus the Pirates and the women’s team against the Lep/Tigers at 2:15 p.m. and at 4 p.m. the premier men will duke it out against the rival Clansmen in the Alberta Cup fixtures.

Kids of Steel

June 2 is the deadline to register for the 22nd annual St. Albert Kids of Steel Triathlon at Fountain Park Recreation Centre.

Youths between four and 19 years old can participate in the June 9 triathlon as an individual or as a team on a swim-bike-run course that varies in distance according to age group.

The competition is also the provincial championships for junior elite (16 to 19) and U23 triathletes. Distances are 750-metre swim, 18.4-km bike (draft legal) and five-km run.

Last year 299 triathletes and 12 teams finished the race.
