St. Albert’s new Target outlet may open as early as May 1.

The store has not confirmed an official opening date but job seekers attending a local Team Member Job Fair were told that the store would open around that time.

The job fair is taking place daily until Feb. 28 – with the exception of Sunday, Feb. 24 – at a temporary office location at 7 St. Anne Street.

This year, Target will open 124 stores across Canada, most in former Zellers’ locations, and hire some 27,000 employees. Individual stores are expected to hire 150 to 200 employees or “team members.”

Construction of the exterior of the St. Albert outlet is almost complete. The local store will add some 21,000 square feet of retail space to St. Albert Centre.

Target spokesperson Tamar Nersesian could not confirm a specific date for the opening.

“We are simply saying spring 2013,” she said. “And we will confirm a specific date closer to ... but as of now we haven’t released any further information about a specific month.”

Thursday’s job fair was fully booked for interviews, though the local recruitment team would not comment on how many people were attending.

Nonetheless, a steady stream of job seekers entered the building throughout the day, setting up interviews for Friday and next week.

Some of the job opportunities include hourly store-level positions for cashiers, sales floor associates, logistics and overnight associates and asset protection.

Most job seekers said the store was secretive as to how many people were hired already. A few came in for a second interview and were told to wait seven to ten days to hear back about possible job opportunities.
