Princess Diana’s replica wedding cake

If you’re a Princess Diana news hound, trivia collector, fashionista or just plain ole’ royal family watcher, you’ve probably tuned into the buzz created by the exhibit of Princess memorabilia coming to West Edmonton Mall.

To further whet the appetite of Diana, A Celebration fans, mall organizers are stirring up excitement with a professional cake-decorating contest. Three local cake decorators are going head-to-head to recreate the ultimate replica of Diana’s 1981 royal wedding cake.

Once Upon a Cake, Cakes by Candace and The Art of Cake battle it out using spatulas and dowels. The winner receives $500 and the winning cake will be displayed at the Queen of Hearts Gala marking the exhibit opening.

The sweet event takes place Sunday, Feb. 3 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on centre stage, level one, phase one.

Billy Elliot dances its way to Edmonton

The touring show of the multi award-winning Billy Elliot the Musical winds its way to Edmonton’s Jubilee Auditorium from March 19 to 24.

It’s a coming-of-age story about a young boy whose inner toughness comes not from the boxing ring but from being true to his beliefs. Growing up in a small town, Elliot finds his niche in ballet classes, a move that forms a bone of contention with his manly father.

But in the end, Elliot’s passion and talent inspire not only his family, but also an entire community and it changes their lives forever.

Billy Elliot is based on the smash film and features Elton John’s music with book and lyrics by Lee Hall. Directed by Stephen Daldry, Billy Elliot the Musical received 81 national and international awards.

Symphony at Winspear

Normally it’s the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra that takes over the Winspear. However on Monday, Feb. 4, the University of Alberta Symphony Orchestra spreads its wings in the revered hall.

The 50-member orchestra, conducted by Peter Dundjerski, takes flight with Rossini’s Overture to The Barber of Seville, Mozart’s Sull’aria from Le Nozze di Figaro, Humperdinck’s Sandman’s Aria and Evening Prayer from Hansel and Gretel and Brahms' Symphony No. 1 in c-minor.

In a special student presentation pianist Kerry Waller performs Liszt’s Totentanz accompanied by the full orchestra.

St. Albert musician Cole VanDerVelden (French horn), former Sturgeon County residents Darrell Soetaert (viola) and Wesley Brenneis (double bass) also perform as orchestra players.
