Red-hot Flyers

The St. Albert Flyers are undefeated in 10 games after blanking the Rockyview Raiders 3-0 Sunday in the Alberta Minor Midget AAA Hockey League.

Liam Thomas scored on the power play in the second period, Curtis Peck potted the insurance marker with 3:10 to play and Ethan Lazaro added an empty net goal at Akinsdale Arena.

Cam Mazur chipped in with two assists as the north division-leading Flyers (16-5-5) wrapped up their January schedule with six wins and one tie.

Pat Dea (9-4-2, 1.80 GAA) stopped 23 shots for his league-high fourth shutout.

The Raiders outshot the Flyers 11-5 in the third. The home team peppered the south-division Raiders (13-11-2) with 39 shots.

The Flyers were coming off a 3-1 win Saturday over the Vikings (7-9-10) in Camrose.

Mazur, Thomas Friesen and Tristen Gavin scored as the Flyers outshot the Vikings 45-24. In net was Tyler Boe (7-1-3, 2.55 GAA).

The next home game is Feb. 6 against the KC Centennials (10-11-2) at 7:45 p.m.

The last game for the Flyers before the playoffs is March 2.

Slash struggle

The St. Albert Slash recorded one point in two games in Calgary last weekend to complete their January schedule with a record of 1-3-2 in the Alberta Major Midget Female Hockey League.

The Slash (12-12-5) lost 6-2 to the Flyers (14-9-6) and skated to a 4-4 draw against the Bruins (5-15-10).

Charity Price opened the scoring against the Flyers in the first period and Deanna Morin’s goal in the third left the Slash trailing 5-2.

Shots were 34-32 for the Slash. Andrea Dombowsky and Kaelin Klim split time in net.

Jenna Jewell’s game tying power-play goal with 12:36 remaining salvaged a point against the Bruins.

Kennedy Newton, Rachel Rochat and Price also scored.

Klim (6-7-4, 2.56 GAA) and Dombowsky (6-5-1, 3.01 GAA) shared netminding duties. Shots were 22 apiece.

Sunday the Slash host the Southeast Tigers of Medicine Hat at 11 a.m. at Northstar Hyundai Arena. The Slash are third in the north division and the Tigers (20-3-6) are the top team in the south standings.

The last game for the Slash before the playoffs is Feb. 9.

Bantam playoffs

The race for the fourth and last playoff spot in the nitro north division is heating up for the St. Albert Sabres in the Alberta Major Bantam Hockey League.

Sunday the Sabres (8-14-7) visit the Lloydminster Heat (19-4-6) at 4:45 p.m. and Tuesday they host the Camrose Vikings (1-25-3) at 7 p.m. at Akinsdale Arena.

The Sabres are three points back of the Canadian Athletic Club (11-14-4) in the playoff chase. Both teams have four games remaining.

The Sabres close out league play at home against the Canadians on Feb. 9 at 3:45 p.m. and the Grande Prairie Storm (3-23-3) on Feb. 10 at 11 a.m.

Last weekend the Sabres posted a 6-3 win against the KC Squires (9-20-1) in Edmonton.

Dylan Huot tallied twice and Zach Tisi, Ethan Marino, Jacob Waldbillig and Ryan Cox notched singles.

Zach Sherburne collected three assists in the team’s first game since going 2-3 at the John Reid Memorial Tournament.

The Sabres were outshot 47-40. In net was Matt Murray (5-8-4, 3.26 GAA).

The Sabres finished 4-1-1 in January after going 1-3-2 in December.

AMBFHL game

Tonight at 7:30 p.m. the St. Albert Lady Raiders visit the Sherwood Park Royals in the Alberta Major Bantam Female Hockey League.

In the north division the Raiders (10-9-1) are two points back of the second-place Royals (9-8-5) with two games in hand.

Last weekend the Raiders lost 3-2 to the Red Deer Chiefs (14-5-4) on the road and 6-2 to Rocky Mountain House (19-2-1) in St. Albert.

Jamie Jones scored both goals against Red Deer. The Raiders were outshot 34-25. In net was Natalie Bender.

Julia Kormysh and Carly Chikie lit the lamp against Rocky Mountain House. Shots were 37-21 for the south division leaders. Bender (4-6, 2.34 GAA) and Hannah Clark (6-3-1, 2.04 GAA) were in net.

The last game for the Raiders before the playoffs is Feb. 24.

Midget AA clash

The St. Albert Blues crushed the St. Albert Crusaders 8-0 in the Northern Alberta Midget AA Hockey League showdown Friday at Northstar Hyundai Arena.

The Blues scored four times in the second period to lead 7-0.

Taylor Lotoski led the Blues with two goals and two assists. Brent Vigneau struck twice and Eamon Moloy, Calvin Lewis, Braden MacIver and Ben Cretain also scored. Colter McCoy and Keaton Pare had three assists apiece.

Mitch Vigneau (8-3-2, 2.00 GAA) stopped 27 shots for the shutout. Adam Gallagher (3-2-4, 3.62 GAA) and Sam Holik (4-9-2, 5.48 GAA) combined to make 52 saves for the Crusaders.

The Crusaders were penalized 15 times for 38 minutes and the Blues were whistled for six minors.

The Blues (17-7-3) were first in the inside edge division going into Tuesday’s game against the KC Colts (13-10-3) in Edmonton. The score was unavailable at press time.

The next game for the Blues is Feb. 6 against the Spruce Grove Saints (21-6-1) at 8:30 p.m. at Troy Murray Arena.

The Crusaders (7-13-6) are ranked sixth out of seven teams in the west blue division.

Saturday the Crusaders visit the Leduc Roughnecks (17-9-1) at 3 p.m. and Sunday they host the Grande Prairie Storm (14-11-2) at 12:15 p.m. at Akinsdale Arena.

The regular season ends Feb. 18.
