In response to the letter – “How can I trust other dog owners” (Nov. 14 Gazette):

I am a dog owner. When our dog is socializing it is always under direct supervision. Even playful aggression is not permitted. We call it animal socializing. Bottom line, unless a dog is in an off-leash area and is attacking another dog in a clear to aggressive nature, the rest is accidental and we as owners should assume the risk when we go off-leash.

Personally, I have not done off-leash. I do walk/jog with our dog. I also encourage a lot of on-leash interaction with other dogs. That is my choice because I accept the risk associated with the off-leash and am not comfortable at this time to do so.

But if I did, I would accept all possible outcomes such as dog bites, dog runs away, gets hit by a car, or makes a new dog friend. Whenever I evaluate a risk-versus-reward scenario, the risk is on me. I am sorry for the dogs that are injured at these areas by dogs that are outright aggressive.
