Re: Remembrance Day Ceremony

It was heartwarming (literally) to look out from the cenotaph on Sunday morning, Nov. 11, 2012, and see hundreds of men, women, and children gathering to pay their respects.

Special mention should be made of:

• St. Albert Public Works employees who worked hard to ensure the area was as snow-free and safe as they could possibly make it;

• St. Albert Army and Air Cadets, including the drummers who led the parade, the cadet escorts for the wreath layers, and in particular, the cadets who maintained the vigil at the cenotaph in freezing conditions;

• As always, our veterans from past conflicts who turn out year after year to honour their comrades;

• 742 Signals from Edmonton Garrison, who provide the sound.

The weather made it difficult for people to attend, but as one woman, whose 19-year-old brother’s plane was lost off the coast of Norway in the Second World War and who has no known grave, said to me, “When I think of what he must have gone through, the least I can do is put up with a bit of cold weather!”
